Damn, I shouldn't have watched this Canon 60 D video

Why this worries me, is that I bought a 500D after they were released.....and was very soon kicking myself for not just buying up and getting the 7D right off the bat. Now I have a 500D sitting in the cupboard, I paid 12 grand for it, and would probably battle to get more than 4 grand for it if I try and sell it.

Camera sitting in the cupboard has nothing to do with the camera not being adequate (especially a recent xxxD). Bwana still uses his 400D despite owning a 7D and 1DmkIII so stop making excuses ;)

True, but Bwana has vastly more experience than I have wrt photography. I am REALLY interested to know what he is purchasing, and where he finds the 7D shortfalls are, that he feels the need to upgrade

BTW this Photography subforum seems to be dominated by Canon enthusiasts - I see very little input from the Nikon users. I read somewhere that in the last 3 years Canon has increased market share (DSLR) to something like 70 % and Nikon is around 20 something %

Bwana....the question begs - if you are upgrading from your 7D

1. What are you upgrading to ?
2. What makes you want to upgrade to your next camera ? Why I am asking....would I not be in the same boat - buy a 7D and want to do a further upgrade soon after ? Is there something lacking in the 7D, or what feature in your next camera is alluring enough to ditch the 7D ?
Right now my 7D is my secondary camera. I'm either getting another 1DMk3 or if the wallet will withstand it a 1DMk4. Why? Better AF, better high ISO and an extra 2 fps - none of which should influence you in the slightest if you're not a sports photographer. Although if you have an inkling that you might want to be, or a birder, then put another huge tick mark in the 7D column as opposed to the 60D. :)

Why upgrade? If the 500D sits in the cupboard why would you expect a 60D/7D to encourage you to do otherwise? Honestly, you should be shooting the crap out of that one before you start thinking about upgrading. I started off with the 400D and I still use it to this day - it saved my bacon just the other day when my 7D's battery died. I only upgraded from the 400D to the 1Dmk3 when I decided I wanted to shoot sports, otherwise I'd probably still be using it.

EDIT - keep the 500D and buy yourself some decent glass. ;)

There are a few Nikon fans here ;)

But, most of the reasonable Canon fans on here will state that, for the most part, you're going to be happy with either (Canon or Nikon), there may just be one feature that swings it either way. It's that reasonableness that keeps me coming back here.
For me, it was because all my friends shoot Nikon, so it made sense for learning, borrowing lenses, etc.

Thanks for the input Bwana. The reason why I am upgrading from the 500D is most importantly...

1. Moving up from 1/4000 in the 500D to 1/8000 (60D or 7D) 1/4000 is really not cutting it for me. I like action and sport photography, and 1/4000 is not doing it for me. If I take a pic of a raindrop hitting a puddle, then I want the droplets to freeze. If I take a pic of the sea and a wave hitting the rocks, then I want the splash created to have zero blur in the picture.
As a test last year, my girlfriend with a 40D (1/8000) and I with my 500D (1/4000), did some tests with dropping a block of ice into a glass of water from 30 cm above the glass. Her 1/8000 was able to capture the splash way better than I could
2. Moving up to 8pfs in the 7D. The 3.5fps in the 500D is also not cutting it for me

I would say the above two are the MAJOR reasons for my upgrade. The extra's that I would get, like more focus points and two processors are just very nice extra's to have

Good luck with your new camera arriving next week.

Agreed, from the year or so that I have been on here....Nikon owners and Canon owners seem to coexist very very well. In other subforums like cellphones and computers, their fans seem to take great delight in trashing the others hardware.

Like you, when I bought my first digital DSLR it could have been a tossup between Canon and Nikon. My girlfriend went for the 40D, and to stick with the same brand so that we could swop lenses, I also bought a Canon. Also great to go to the same Canon roadshows together :D

I have since bought quite a few Canon lenses, so it looks like I will stay with Canon.

Too bad there isn't much representation from the Sony, Pentax and Olympus camps. There are shooters of each lurking about, but they got lost in the sea of Canon/Nikon chatter.

It would seem that DSLR photographers are a mature bunch per se.

Ah ok then. The forum there is particularly difficult to use but I do see plenty of fighting over egos.

I prefer the POTN forums.

WRT action and sport photography - you'll never shoot above 1/4000th anyway - you'll be lucky if there's enough light to get over 1/2500th even on a bight sunny day and even if you can, you probably don't want to.

From what you said though I'm getting an idea that the 7D is the better option over the 60D.

Sports photography is expensive - start saving for those f/2.8 lenses now. :)

So I bought myself a 60D today. Was going to save up for the 7D, but from the reviews I've seen, the 60D will serve me well and I got a fantastic deal on it. On the negative side, I now have 3 DSLR's and no money :whistling:

Anyone wanna buy a 400D? :p

Depends on what lenses you have but perhaps your next jump will be to the 5DIII or previously owned 5DII. I think the difference between the 60D and 7D doesn't warrant the change unless there's a specific reason.

I don't see a 5D in my future. Too slow and I prefer my 300mm to be at least 390mm! :)

Enjoy your 60D. :D

What you gain in length you lose in width. So when you shoot a hot model you may have performance issues and then compensate by either pulling on a hood or some sort of protective filter.

Well, I am in Chicago now, overcast cold (8 degrees C). Just to bring finality to this thread.....I have just got back from one of the "Best Buy" stores, where I eventually succumbed to a new Canon 7D. It was a difficult decision on paper, but when I got to hold the 60D, I could see that the 7D was vastly superior in construction. Battery is on charge here in my hotel room, so I will do some shooting this week around Lake Michigan.

Oh, I got to give the Nikon range a look over. If it wasn't for the fact that I already have Canon lenses, I might have gone for the Nikon 7000 - fantastic looking camera, and good specs.

Oh......how'z my free wireless internet speed from the hotel room !!!!!!!!!!! and it's unlimited. I could seriously live here :D
