Simple car security gadget that can slash insurance premiums

Installing a dashcam in your car could help reduce your vehicle insurance premiums as it acts as an additional layer of security, according to insurer King Price.

They also provide several other benefits, making them attractive to many of the country's motorists — they deter car theft, protect drivers on the roads, and assist with insurance claims.

How does it prevent theft? They don't give the camera back. There is also some weird effects when driving with the sun head on as it flairs

WiFi cloud upload as it records is a thing now I think. Also there are anti-glare features on newer models.

So you'd need a mobile connection? Also not sure how a camera would fix the lens flare effect

If that was true then it would have been one of the questions that Naked interrogated me with, which is nothing further from the truth.

TL/DR: Naked don't give a f*** (IF YOU DRIVE A CAR NEWER THAN 1991)

What data plan are you on?

Vuma Reach Fiber Backup / Openserve High Speed fiber dual at home. Mobile sim with a small bit of unexpiring data for emergencies in a spare phone in my vehicle trunk - along with a charged Romoss Powerbank.

Afrihost LTE for vehicles Dashcam. Uploads to Google (~R53 per month for a lot of extra storage ...200Gb I think).

Best thing is my ultra-rich brother pays for all of it in exchange for me teaching/tutoring my neice once a week for an hour online for Mathematics :D

Still gotta talk to a human when you claim though. And the claiming process is the most important part when it comes to insurance.
Is it?

I thought it was managing the gauntlet of salesmen calling you now that you are on some list. (just try hippo)

Normally, we don't claim insurance. The stories I hear is that if you have to, then its a pleasant experience.

Am I wrong?

Don’t have to talk to salesman when you have a broker. All you do is email or WhatsApp them and they move mountains for you.

Naked AI isn’t going to move mountains for you, Naked claim administrators aren’t going to move mountains for you.

Please don't take this the wrong way but I really thought I was making a good choice leaving it up to AI?

Here is what I'm paying for my 2 cars (I've chosen to put the TDI on ice (as it doesn't leave the garage)):

there are dashcams with build in LTE modems/wifi that record and upload continuously while the car is running or when motion is detected. Insurance companies would *love* to have a direct integration where they would have access to footage during any claim.

We can't have nice data deals in this country.

My boet in sydney has uncapped data plan with roaming, I think for like $50 (I just made up that number).

We are blessed in this country with expensive cars and cell network, all because government is too stupid to create a common network (not having 3 towers on every hill), and allowing the car industry to compete with the rest of the world.

Don't they mostly export? So why would they lose jobs if we can get a R35k Nissan Leaf with 75k on the clock that had a roadworthy test every year?

We are a poor country today now that the Rand is worth fokkal after 30 years of ANC looting.

Imagine if our second hand cars were like new only because the license fee costs slightly more because of reasons so people want to get rid of them at any cost. They say its cheaper to buy a car in Scotland and drive to Cornwall than to catch the train.

Imagine that life here in sunny South Africa? Imagine the cheapest electricity in the world, R5 to the dollar, leasing new EV's for R360 per month (todays exchange rate) or R100 per month @ R5/USD.

Remember when a tank of petrol cost less than R100 during our decade of Rainbow Nation darling of the world pre Zuma honeymoon?

Anyway, I'm drunk, I'm rambling, I said what I wanted to say, now I need to top up my jack daniels on the rocks. (I've stopped the beer as I'm supposed to be doing the low carb high fat transition, but I'm not allowed alcohol or anything fun).

No, rather not. Insurers are inclined to use what they can against you when it comes to claims. Anything you use must not tell your insurer anything about your driving.
That discovery app! I tried it once back when I had a career, and I rate myself as a very good driver (what makes a good driver? Making your passengers feel comfortable, even 160km/h is being a good driver).

Alas, the app was full with harsh braking over every speed bump on stockville rd (van riebeeck rd winston park to a complex next to the traffic department) every day to and from work. Add speeding on freeway offramps when speed limit suddenly changes from 120km/h to 60km/h as soon as you cross the line.

Thank **** my insurance was a perk through the company, it was a nice experiment. I feel sorry for the okes that had policies with them and get docked each time they mount a speed bump or go round a corner like a normal person or don't slow down to 60 before leaving the freeway (N2 umgeni rd in my scenario, pre-interchange upgrade). These days I'm going 140 before the uphill bend around suicide jumper corner (I also just made that up but I feel like I've heard of people offing themselves on that bridge, been a while though) down onto springfield umgeni rd.

TL/DR version:

If you drive this route, don't use discovery car insurance app.
