I see on the site there is a 4U contract option:
http://www.vodacom.co.za/packages/contract/4u_4ucontract.jsp

1) Can I add databundles on top of this contract?
2) Must I sign a 24 month contract or can I take on a month-to-month basis?

If the above is true, this would be a perfect workaround to the pre-paid data bundles fiasco. Also, the call rates are a bit cheaper than on pre-paid. So there is advantage in that too.

The initial reaction was that you cannot load a databundle on 4u, but I'm awaiting final conformation.

What many subs do is to get a Messenger contract and add a bundle to it.

The dude at Vodaworld said you have to pay for CLI which is R9.50 per month :(
The nice thing though is he said if you cancel the contract they won't charge you anything, i.e. they won't charge you CLI or any other subscription fee for the rest of the 24 months. So effectively the 4U contract is a month to month contract in terms of what you pay :)
But get that in writing before you sign...

all the big moneymaking companies... ie banks, isp's, telecommunications providers in south africa are making their clients used to paying for silly charges for things that are free mostly anywhere else in the world.... thats also why vodacom sent me an sms informing me that i "qualify" to recieve my billy by email monthly.....

I will not be making use of this "privilege" which is actually just a method for vodacom to make more money out of me by saving themself the price of printing and posting AND making me pay them to download the email via their connection.....

Perdedrolle is nie vye nie vodacom...

I've got my blackberry on a 4u contract. Thinking of switching my phone over to one too as there is no monthly subs charge to pay. I'm tired of paying for a phone I've already replaced out of my pocket.

How is the confirmation coming along?

And pay R40/pm (R480 pa) for something you dont need. Don't think so.

Hey, thanks man.

I phoned the guys at the vodacom4u shop, and they said that I can also cancel the CLI and Itemised billing. If that is the case, I will be moving back over to Vodacom for data at the end of the month. Pitty I just loaded a 350MB bundle yesterday.

Prepaid databundles would still be great though :)

WHICH VODASHOP nicovdw??????????
I strongly suspect you have been misinformed.

Good luck, if you actually manage to get the CLI and itemised billing off, please post an image of the contract!

According to the sales person at Vodacare Century City, Dave Caledon, you MUST take CLI and itemised billing, which comes to a total of R28 per month. Other shops say either you must pay for CLI and not itemised billing or vice versa, the dude at Vodaworld said you have a choice in which of the 2 you want etc. etc.

If you MUST take both, then isn't Vodacom lying on their website? See http://www.vodacom.co.za/packages/contract/4u_4ucontract.jsp

Another thing is it is only Vodacare that can issue you a 4U contract AFAIK. The Vodashops I contacted said I had to go to a Vodacom service center.

As far as I know, (according to my Service provider and Vodacom CC, there are no data bundles available for this contract.

2) Must I sign a 24 month contract or can I take on a month-to-month basis?

Please see answer above regarding the data bundles.
however, the $U contract can be taken on a month-2-month basis or 24 months; it's up to you.

You may want to have a look at mtn's data bunldes.
Grab a mtn sim, load airtime and choose between the different options available.

Mtn's data helpdesk toll fre from mtn phone is 083155 and they answer usually within 30 seconds.

If the above is true, this would be a perfect workaround to the pre-paid data bundles fiasco. Also, the call rates are a bit cheaper than on pre-paid. So there is advantage in that too.

Note that some of the vodacom 4u contracts are not charging you per second.

So, if you get through to someone's voicemail, you'll get charged for the full minute.

I went to Vodashop Cresta today to ask about the 4U contract... got a very blank look from the sales person and then some excuse about how they probably still had to go for training for the new product.

It does however look very promising from what i read on the website.

Can we please have confirmation on the CLIP and itemised billing charges.

Just got my 4U contract. I didn’t take CLI or itemised billing so my monthly subs is zero. They dude said I can load a data bundle.

For the first 3 months you can't spend more than R175.
I didn't ask but I assume you can't load a bundle that costs more than that then for the first 3 months. That's a bit crappy :(

Another interesting thing was they wanted to charge me R100 for the simcard. Instead, I ran across to Checkers, bought a prepaid sim for R3 and loaded R12 airtime. Then I requested to have it converted to contract.
So my connection fee was R97 instead of R200 :D

Glad it worked out - esp wrt the CLI and itemized billing fees.

As my contracts expire I'm also moving them over to 4U contracts and it's saving me a bundle.

My first bill

Just got my first bill. Didn't load a bundle yet as I still have airtime left on another network, lol.

What is interesting is that my first bill is -R6.34
There is a "4U credit" of -R21.93. My calls were R14 something and I sent some sms. So yes, THEY owe ME money! :D

The same happened with my colleague - we applied on the same day. It seems you save the R200 connection fee if you take a Vodacom SP pre-paid sim and convert that to 4U contract. So now it looks like I saved R221.93

The funny thing is, I didn't ask for CLI or itemised billing, but my CLI works and I got an itemised bill, but they are not charging me for it!

Thanks VC :)

In a radical move to stop the complaints about costing, Vodacom decided to start paying you to use the network, so the more you talk the more credit you'll get.

You can either cash out once per month, or if you wish, let the credit run up and claim a product at the end of every 12 months. If you use about 500 minutes per month, you should be able to claim a new laptop with embedded HSDPA.
