Yep i heard an interview with datapro MD on Radio 2000 tonight.
Said some interesting things the most startling was that currently the ISP's (i would guess he was talking of lantic in particular) margin on ADSL accounts was currently 13% but "From november the retail margin would increase to 27% on ADSL packages".

Seems like everyone is getting a piece of this gravy train.

Just think about what the ISP's need to provide you with for that 13% -> 27% .
E-Mail, personal webspace, 24 Hour Call Centre for Support ......
These things cost money .... the 2nd Tier ISP's need to provide the most whilst recooping the least.

10 months after DataPro bought Wickhit they could still not get my account right, was getting billed in kinda 2 - 3 month intervals, eventualy I got fed up and just closed my account.
Hope the Atlantic folks have better luck than I did.

Those services dont cost that much money. These ISPs can host their webspace and email overseas if they want for less than $10 per month per 500+ users.

This bump in percentage helps to explain the relative silence we're experiencing from the isps who were posting so many reduced price threads month.

Here is the moneyweb transcript of that interview.

Daveogg you were right, the guy did say that their margin is going to go up from 13% to 27% because of Telkom's new pricing structure.
What ever happened to passing the saving onto the customer???????

Well to be frank, being in business for only 13% is not worth it at all really.

Drip-feeding the isp's just Telkom's way of keeping them on it's side. As for the extra services I wouldn't want or need most of that crud - I could do it all myself if I could get a static IP - all I want is an unshaped/uncapped pipe for a good price.

Join the club! With a pipe of 2048/1024 I'll be happy for a while, and my business also! The extra services are just marketing tools: they cost the ISP virtually nothing, and they are passed on to the consumer as if they (the consumer) are scoring a huge "extra". Wish the ISP's would get real, and realize that the average consumer is getting more educated... but I suppose as long as there are fools falling for it, they won't! :(

A lot of people in the know can provide these services for themselves if they are given
a chance but you guys aren't the majority, the majority need it done on a Service Provider level. And this costs money. I agree with Sneeky.

It's just Telkom strangling the ISP's.

My take on this argument is that the isp should of course make a profit, however from the consumers point of view this sucks. The isp's additional costs are fixed and independant on the amount of bandwidth i use. So why should i pay 10 times more for my email account and support than the guy who only buys one gb a month.

In fact the grannies who find one gb is enough for their email and browsing needs are exactually the people who need the email and online support not the guy who is busting his nut to afford the 10gb that he needs, only to be paying an extra 27% for services he does not use.

Datapro/Atlantic

Just for information, "In terms of the acquisition DataPro will acquire @lantic’s 32 000-strong customer base, while retaining the @lantic brand. The business will continue to trade independently. "
What this means is that we and will continue as before giving our best service where possible.
If as I have read someone has a bad experience with Atlantic feel free to contact me on 0861 113 942 and disscuss the problems. :)

You can't complain about the service because there is none

Bad service obviously went along. On hellopeter they are classified as a company that does not respond & believe me that is true.

Next time how about starting a new thread instead of resurrecting one that is over two years old??
