India may not be the most safety conscious car market, but the poor performance of the Datsun GO at the NCAP safety tests damaged the brand's reputation before it could be established.

It has now been learnt that Datsun is offering a driver side airbag with the T (O) variant, on the GO and GO+.

The update has not been reflected in the official brochures on the website yet, but dealerships have started accepting bookings and the price lists reflect the same.

The addition of the driver airbag raises the price for both models by around Rs. 15,000/-, over the T-variant.

While deliveries of the GO T (O) variant can be expected around the second week of July, dealers say the airbag equipped GO+ can reach customers in the first week of August (delivery time frame may differ depending on the location).

But seriosuly - I heard they are getting airbags.
Seems they were able to get a number of surplus airbags from Takata. Really cheap.
(I took one look at the Go and asked to testdrive the Chery instead.)

Funny how people make a fuss about this car, when most of us drove cars with no airbags for years. That being said, I won't pay R100k for this POS

Its missing basic safety equipment which is standard on virtually all other cars. Its excusable in old cars, but not in modern cars.

If you want to release a modern car, you need to use modern safety equipment. End of story. Its not sold in Europe for a reason - they wont stand for it. Neither should we.

The problem with this car is not really the lack of an airbag. It is the fact that the structure is so weak that it buckles like a crushed soda can. An airbag won't help if the entire front crashes into your body.

Do you think these "surplus airbags" from Takata are the faulty ones they replaced on the recalled vehicles?

Fair point.

So I guess the fact that the NCAP testers said that installing an airbag into the GO would make no difference to the survivability of the passengers of the car is just going to be ignored.
Whoever buys one of these things better pray they are never in a front or side-on collision.

When I first saw the crash test video of the GO, I thought where are the airbags? Then, looking closer at the video, I realised an airbag wouldn't make a difference. NCAP said as much.

I wouldn't want to be in a Go in ANY sort of collision, heck, I wouldn't want to accidentally mount the pavement with the thing!

There is little excuse for bad engineering. Nissan should be ashamed of themselves. Even the Chinese cars do better than this.

This is something I would expect from the Chinese, but not a manufacturer like Nissan...

There is little excuse for people buying these POS... I was recently looking for a secondhand car and you won't believe the amount of shyte out there. I kept asking myself who in the hell would have bought these things new!

I dunno about you guys but I see a fair number of Go! cars on Cape Town roads these days. All of them are the "high" spec model.
