I have no problem with even basic workers earning a good salary. These salaries doe not seem excessive.

BUT

Strong performance, conduct and quality requirements should be linked to it.

Two kids in my daughters class have gone overseas with their parents during the school holidays to scout for places to live. And another 2 will be leaving early 2023.

Also a cousin.

R14,000-19,000 for general workers working on national infrastructure. Don’t make me laugh at how embarrassingly low this is. Don’t know what this economist think they should be paid but clearly he’s more on the side of minimum wage.

Just goes to show you how out of touch he is. Just because everyone in SA is being short changed in their employment situation doesn’t justify paying people working at national infrastructure sites a pittance. I understand why the strike happened legal or not.

R20,000-25,000 would be more realistic for a general worker position to ensure the employees are more happy to be at work and to do a good job.

Think of it this way. How well would you do your job if you get a kick in the teeth every day you go to work and every payday?
You are very generous. I hope you pay you gardener and domestic similarly.

If Eskom's engineers are so "highly skilled" and deserve better salaries, why is the utility in such a shambolic state? Surely it's not the general workers who are to blame?

It's not even the engineers that are to blame, most of the people that are to blame did their thing and are not lo her even there, the one's that are there are only dealing with the consequences.

What does this refer to-
"He also argued that Eskom workers should be happy with lower salaries than those in the private industry because they enjoyed job guarantees that non-government employees did not."

Are eskom workers unfireable? Is that because of Gov since its an SOE or unions? Why can you not fire a government employee?

Friends that work at other SOEs didnt get fired, they just didnt get paid instead...
The Unions are protecting them that's why they can't get fired

I get your point, but the counterargument is that you can’t have both of these things:

1.) High pay
2.) An inflated workforce

And the unions want both of those things together. So if workers are part of these unions, they should live with lower wages in exchange for the security of knowing the union won’t allow retrenchments.
There are so many Unions in SA, and it is these Unions that are causing problems. It is therefore clear the Unions are fighting for the wage increase, not for low wages, which means they are getting above average. Shudder to think how our old age pensioners survive on Govt., pensions.

Ok, Lets do that and enjoy load shedding stage 30 for the next 10 years.

We’ll see how you feel after 1 week with no electricity LOL
Let me remind you we none whites didn't enjoy the benefit of electricity during the apartheid era, we can survive using candles and paraffin lamps. It is you that will miss it for the usage of television, cell phones, and computers.

50% of the country was electrified by 1994, the rest of the races make up just under 10% of the entire population...
Ipso facto far more blacks had access to power than the all the other races combined.
The ANC has only done an additional 35% in 28 years. The difference is the the 10% didn't quadruple

Yet another reason on the pile for South Africa to reduce its exposure in Eskom by moving to IPPs. The distributed smaller scale IPPs are clearly a benefit to the nation as it reduces the risk of Eskom Unions holding the nation to randsom.

Hopefully the use this illegal strike as an opportunity to get rid of the excess and especially useless staff in Eskom
Pull a Maggie Thatcher on them. Those coal workers are still p!ssed off decades later.

That may be so, but out of that, how many actually pay for electricity, in the informal settlement where the govt., spent billions to have them connected to power, most of them have hot-wired the system by passing the pre-paid meters. Who checks on that. The fact is that the people in the informal section have contact with municipal electricians to do illegal tampering to bypass the meters.

Too many job creation happened at Eskom. The welder who welds now needs someone to hold his dick while he works. The engineer who engineers now needs a person with a brain to tell him what to do. Manager who is suppose to manage now needs a supporting manager to support him… fvck the department who did a whole plant needs another department created to lighten the load of work. The new department created needs a contractor to help them do their job … creating jobs takes real creativity…

You’re comparing gardening and housekeeping to working in a power station?
Yes we are talking general workers here. Those are the people who serve tea and clean the bathroom. Why does it matter where they are employed rather than what they do.
