I bought RAM the other day and when i put it in my pc Windows refuses to start. The bios boots and can see the memory but once windows loads it reboots the computer.

The previous memory in the computer was 1333Mhz and i now just bought 1600Mhz believing its backward compatible.

Can anyone help me as to whats going on?

Can Windows at least boot into Safe Mode? The RAM would be faulty if Windows gave a blue screen with an error and then rebooted.

I had a similar issue when I bought a 16gb kit, one of the 8gb sticks were faulty. Was unable to boot to windows and in some cases never even reached the bios. When I did manage to get it to boot, I ran memtest which indicated faulty ram

Only selected memory controller chips can use RAM above 1333mHz.

What CPU and Mobo do you have.

Memtest is not always an indicator of faulty memory unfortunately.
I had a faulty gpu which cause mayhem in my pc.
I replaced the PSU, mem, hdd, etc. because the supplier said the GPU was fine.
I sent it it 3 times and every time they said it was fine so I went ahead and replaced virtually the entire machines contents luckily still under warranty.

After the 3rd time and still major issues I returned the GPU and demanded a new card.
Once I installed the new card everything came right.
Memory that previously tested with thousands of errors after 24 hr scan ended up having 0 issues after 48hrs of scanning.

Intel DH55HC With a Core i5 Chip

What is strange is that the bios boots perfectly.

There is also no blue screen. I don't even know if windows 8 can BSOD. It won't boot into safe mode either.

Doest seem that your mobo supports 1600mhz

Four 240-pin DDR3 SDRAM Dual Inline Memory Module (DIMM) sockets
Support for DDR3 1333 /1066 MHz DIMMs
Support for up to 16 GB of system memory
Tested system memory

I'd reckon it has to do with memory timings and/or voltage and nothing else.

You may have to go into the advanced settings to tweak it.

Tried that too. Will try to reinstall windows, i have also read win8 doesn't much like changes.

If all else fails where can i sell the memory?

Sounds like a dodgy Windows 8 issue.

Test with another OS or a Live Linux distro.

I have a feeling something is wrong with the mobo. I tried 2 corsair 4GB 1033Mhz chips and it reads it as 2x 2GB chips.

@sybertiger will try your advice. Thanks

You certainly find instances of ram and mobo's not being compatible. Dunno if i missed it, but what are the exact specs of both?

You can also check for:
a BIOS update for your motherboard which might resolve memory compatibility issues.
a Memory compatibility list for your motherboard to check if the particular memory is listed.

Generally memory with higher specc'ed speeds will run fine, even if the mobo/cpu does not support the speed, it will just be clocked lower.
