Ok what is the deal between these 2 other than the obvious speed difference. I've seen sites selling both, and the ddr2-667 is always more expensive. How come? Is ddr2-667 good enough or is it better to go for ddr2-800?

Can someone please shed some light on this?

well look performance wise there is not much difference and maybe thats why they make it cheaper so ppl will upgrade :)

ddr 800 is good for overclocking

The DDR2 800 has a faster clockspeed, but slower latency. The DDR2 667 has a slower clockspeed, but faster latency. Allmost every motherboard on the market only supports 1066 MHz FSB, which is 2x the memory clockspeed. So it is better, and cheaper, to buy the DDR2 667 RAM. Otherwise you will waste the extra clockspeed with a slower latency penalty.

According to info I got from my suppliers it would seem that the DDR2 667 is fairly older compared to the faster part, however it is more expensive and could be not because they're punting faster speed but probably because recently there was a natural disaster in Asia. There was an earthquake that damaged several fab plants in China and other places which hiked the price of a lot of semiconductor parts rather sharply. We were warned and, subsequently felt the effects, at the time we were securing stocks to start a production run of a new product. We paid hiked up prices on our processor chips.

All the production affected by the earthquake had to be re-tested/made over from scratch

When buying memory you must check if your memory clock speed is a multiplier of your system's bus speed, not having them a multiple of each other causes bottlenecks.

ddr-800 is also prolly more purchased of late and as such has becoem cheaper.

This thread is pretty useless if you don't provide the stats for each memory. BRAND, CAS LATENCY, VOLTAGE, etc etc etc\

So which memory would you recommend? The ddr2-667 or the ddr2-800?
DDR2-533

According to Samsung DDR2 - 800 is like brand new, the datasheet is dated this month

Again, What is the latency on this memory ? DDR xxx means nothing, its all about the latency !

I won't see much difference between these two, unless you run benchmark.so rather get DDR667

Ignore my comment - I don't think I should post here @ 2:30 AM while I haven't slept for 2 days.

Try to get DDR2-533 CL4.2.2 / 4.3.3 / 4.4.4 - Don't get the higher clocked DDR2's. Rather clock it yourself. If you can, get some OCZ 533 - or which ever low value's they come in.

And if you really can get the "OCZ EL PC2-8000 XTC: Low Latency PLUS DDR2-1100" since you can run it DDR2 533 1:1

Incubate, get the DDR800. Forget the DDR667 entirely.
The DDR667 4-2-2-8 ram is great, but you could probably get the DDR800 to do those timings at 667 (not garunteed though)

At some point running 1:1 will be more important than tight timings esp for DDR2. ie you'll do better with the increased bandwidth than tight timings.
I honestly see no reason why you shoudl buy the more expenisve and lsower ram. Get the 800 and if you can maybe DDR1066 ram :p
