De Ruyter and Mantashe at war

Eskom CEO André de Ruyter is locking horns with energy minister Gwede Mantashe over South Africa's future electricity generation plans.

Sunday newspaper Rapport reports that Mantashe is trying to stop the Eskom CEO and public enterprises minister Pravin Gordhan from binding South Africa to a radical shift from coal-fired power generation.

That comes after the announcement by US president Joe Biden at the 26th Conference of the Parties (COP26) that several rich nations would provide funding of $8.5 billion (R133.5 billion) to South Africa over the next three to five years to speed up the country's move from coal to clean energy.
The problem with SA is that unions make it impossible to get rid of incompetent people. Eskom is overstaffed. It is time they actually hold people accountable. Clearly some of the people who works at places like Eskom and Government only care about their salaries and benefits. I say get rid of dead weight and restart so that SA can flourish.

It's simple really, the performance metrics are usually so dodgy that it is impossible to declare someone incompetent, unless the person really goes out of their way to prove themselves incompetent. If you have ever worked in a team environment like Eskom you would understand just how difficult it is to accurately measure performance, so the unions are usually able to pick apart whatever attempt management comes with.

We just built 2 new coal plants. Our entire fleet is coal. Get what we have working before doing radical shifts away from it.

We are not bordering France or some other nuclear power nation that can help us out if there's no wind.
They not finished.
5/6 on one working and missing FDG
Other only 3/6 commissioned only half completed.
Both years behind schedule and massively over budget.

RE IPP is the way to go.

Gwede is chomping at the bit for more expensive coal plants. Probably easier for them to loot and sabotage.
Well it's a milch cow pattern by now, Medupi and Kusile have delivered (and continue to deliver) lucrative returns for ANC cadres under the guise of Chancellor House and a number of other BEE firms. The Chief Architects of looting and State Capture will continue to feed on public funds and and distribute it to connected cadres with impunity. In 20 years' time Cyril (who himself was a beneficiary of silver golden spoons ) will testify in the same Zondo pattern: That he once again made a decision to "oversee" the "black broederbond" rather than challenge it, because somehow it's better. Worst still: Every fool with an ANC vote will believe him.

Too many top ANC members are making money from the continued use of coal. This is why they will continue to reject the use of solar ect.

On the dot! And the most “ powerfull” and militant unions in the world
They were actually discussing this on SABC News yesterday and how ceratin ANC members have vested interests in the continued use of coal. Pretty enlightening and totally to the detriment of all South Africans.

The ANC in general has never really shown much of an inclination to do things for the long term betterment of South Africans, even when those things would mean significantly more money for them as well.

And when any attempt is made to change the performance metrics to make them actually measure performance, then the unions will throw a fit and incite a strike.
