Definitely independent is the way to go.

Everyone here seems to be missing that

I actually don't think everyone here is missing that, I think we're all very much aware the independent is the way to go, hell even Andre is aware of that fact if you listen to him.

The only person who isn't is Uncle Gweezy since independent limits his options to skim 95% off the top.

Independent can even be coal. Have a regulation in place stipulating they need scrubbers installed or whatever and it's all good.

Independent can be anything without a doubt, but of course coal would be a harder sell from a financing point of view for an independent entity and I doubt any independent entity will stump up all the cash to build a new coal plant in this country. The economics and social reality of that sort of thing make it a very risky endeavour and the money would be better served in other markets with more stable returns.

The reality is that the vast majority of "independent" power in this country will always be renewables of some form or another since they're faster to bring to market, and easier to finance on the international market.

And when any attempt is made to change the performance metrics to make them actually measure performance, then the unions will throw a fit and incite a strike.
Unfortunately sometimes it is just impossible to design a perfect performance plan for some workplaces, especially if they never had any to begin with and the job spec was not orientated that way, it end being who can push harder and force their way through, if management does it is usually at the detriment of workers who have to meet impossible targets, if the unions are strong enough they will force their way through and the performance plan will favour them.

Of course Mantashe would object - coal is the engine in his gravy train.........and he has not woken up to the fact that renewables are now far cheaper than coal.

My tinfoil-hat prediction is that we will have sanctions applied to us in order to force us away from coal.

This will happen sooner or later, COP26 is in motion.

Oh Uncle Gweezy knows that renewables are cheaper, and will help the country get out of this power cockup way faster, but that doesn't line his pockets or keep his support base happy, so he is going out of his way to frustrate the process no end.

No sanctions needed, no funding will be provided for coal.

That's a death knell on its own.

I don't get the hate for Greta.

Actually, maybe I do, people don't like the truth. Lies are more palatable.
It's not hate for her so much as the adults with an agenda which should not let a child speak on issues they themselves don't understand.

I never thought I would say this, but I agree with Mantashe, although probably for different reasons.

I suspect he is just trying to protect all the BBEE/Gupta coal deals and companies, but am only guessing on that front.

But the fact of the matter is we are blessed with plenty of cheap coal. And we have an economy killing shortage of electricity. And there are only two practical ways of providing reliable base load to ANY country - fossil fuels or nuclear.

So if you want affordable, reliable, stable electricity in South Africa, we need to build a lot more coal power stations. There is no way around that conclusion IMO.

BUT..

What we cannot afford is more BBEE/patronage/Gupta coal companies ripping up the country and leaving nothing but a mess behind.

Nor can we afford more BBEE built power stations that cost 5-6 times the price and then fall apart the day before they are switched on.
