At least two people were killed and about 50 hurt in a major stampede in South Korea’s capital Seoul after thousands gathered on a narrow street to celebrate Halloween.

The crowd crush occurred in the entertainment district of Itaewon on Saturday, said Choi Cheon-sik from the National Fire Agency, adding many victims were treated for cardiac arrest.

Post-pandemic overcrowding:

At least 120 dead after stampede during Halloween festivities in Itaewon, South Korea​

Choi Cheon-sik, an official from the National Fire Agency, said more than 400 emergency workers from around the country have been deployed to the scene, including almost all of those available in Seoul.

At least 146 people have been killed after a stampede in the South Korean capital of Seoul, according to local fire authorities.

The victims were crushed by a large crowd pushing forward on a narrow street during Halloween festivities near the Hamilton Hotel in the Itaewon area.

Emergency workers tried to resuscitate more than 50 people​


In total, emergency workers have tried to resuscitate more than 50 people, according to South Korean news agency Yonhap.

Witnesses said the narrow streets around the scene of the crush were so crowded that it was difficult for the emergency services to make their way through to help the victims.

According to Yonhap, a total of 142 rescue vehicles were deployed.
