Deal too good to be true?

Hi all,

First post here and hoping a few peeps might be able to assist with some advice.

CellC is offering a great deal/promotion and obviously trying to get rid of Galaxy S smart phones. R250pm for 200 any time minutes + data/sms bundle.

I am considering going for the deal (and migrating from Vodacom) but concerned that the phones will be running the older Android platform (not gingerbread).

With ice scream sandwich around the corner I am reluctant to be two releases behind.

Question is - does anyone know if it is possible to (easily) update to the latest version of gingerbread on the Galaxy?
Also, are there any issues relating number migration and general CellC coverage?

Thanks so much for any help!

How much data? I don't know hey, I would rather try and get an S2 instead, there is a big difference between the two. I know you can get the S2 on MTN for R299.

Thanks for the tips...

It comes with 500mb/month.

Not too concerned with the deal itself... just mainly wondering if it would be possible to upgrade to gingerbread?

Yes gingerbread is officially supported by samsung for the galaxy s. Its as simple as connecting ur fone to a computer with the supplied software (kies) and waiting for the update prompt to pop up (assuming you have an internet connection).

As per the postabove, there is an unnoficial version(s) of ice cream sandwich available for the galaxy s,but installing these will void your warranty and are currently very buggy so not recommended for the average user.

I disagree. Loaded the TeamICSSGS RC 4.2 onto a friend's Galaxy S, and it is very quick, smooth and not buggy at all. He has had no issues since loading it last week. Yes, it does void your warranty, but you can unroot if necessary.

+1

Custom ROMS are often quicker to market, less buggy and faster than what the manufacturers put out

My girlfriend has been running an ICS custom ROM on her GS for 3 months and has not had any issues at all...

Red bull Mobile

This is the Red bull Mobile deal. And IMO it is unbeatable value for money at the moment.

http://www.redbullmobile.co.za/offer/packages/contracts/ (RBM 200)

I am based in Pretoria and travel around Gauteng I am happy with coverage. In fact, my coverage is better at home than my wife's who is on Vodacom.

I would consider 3 phones on that contract: Motorola MB525; LG Optimus Black P970; Samsusng I9000.

All run around 1GHz single core CPU, definitely not top of the range by any means. But good as an entry level android phone.

I have the P970. Its a great device, that would get ICS one day according to LG (they are slow with updates). The only downside to this phone for me is the loud speaker quality and the mic quality.

Other entry level Android phones I would consider are the HTC Desire S, and the cheaper Sony Ericson Live With Walkman (both better specked than their cheap Samsung counterparts).

Crap deal + cool phone = High Price
Great deal + old phone = Decent Price

It's a trade off. Besides, I am pretty sure those phones will be able to do what most people need doing and still have some CPU cycles to spare. Tech junkies are not the average user.
