What's not proof about actual data, Omac, as opposed to your opinion?

"Bullsh*t" does not equate to proof, my friend.

Ok here is something to ponder about seeing that your trying to be all political

Serious crimes

Check the crime stats for 1979 - 1985.
then
Check the crime stats for 2000 - 2006

Google it if need be.

I hope you were being sarcastic... Why in the world would I want to waste two years of my life in military service? I have zero interest in training \ fighting \ protecting politicians or in the concept of patriotism.

FFS. I have much better things to do than listen to some d*ckhead barking out orders. I could sit around jerking off all day.

And the death penalty? Do you really think a judge (IOW, an idiot most of the time) should have the right to decide whether somebody lives or die?

Really? what better things do you have to do? study perhaps? if not, what constructive thing can u do to benefit your country? if you don't like what we are suggesting, how do you suggest we bring down crime? or are you willing to risk getting killed every day and let innocent people die beside you?

Why are you people so hungry for blood? Is there not enough murder in SA already without State sanctioned murder too? I'm no expert on crime, so please don't ask me for a solution, all I'm saying is that given the data on hand, the death penalty is not effective in reducing crime.

Pitbull - I don't see how I'm trying to be "all political".

thats because the previous governement kept the most desparate people confined to impoverished settlements. there are no stats to show the crimerates in the townships. from people i've spoken to all that happened is that is now spread outside the confines of places the government didn't want you to see

There seem to be two lines of argument running through this thread - perhaps we should split them apart?

In terms of military service:

I believe that there is space for some kind of compulsory national (not military) service that could serve as a kind of appenticeship. For example, if I completed some kind of varsity qualification I would then spend a year practising my new skills in a community that needed it.

After this I would be equipped with both a degree, and a year of practical experience. In this way I both give and receive some benefit. Military service = a big waste of time.

(For those who do not study after school I imagine a more direct apprenticeship approach)

Just to back up Simon as well, the previous government never counted blac-on-black crime. They also forced people to live in certain areas to protect the whities.... Sorry you cannot use those crime stats as proof of the death penalty.

Personally I want the death penalty, I also want the law changed to "Guilty until proven innocent". If you cannot prove you did not do it then sorry for you. Not the other way around. You know how quickly our court cases would move then?

It is not as simple as this! The crime we are seeing in this country now is explosive and completely out of control. The types of crimes committed have never been seen before in any civilised countries.

These criminals don't just break into homes and steal - they violently rape, and then kill. They are not doing this because the need food.

The cash in transit heists that happen 3 times a day now - why burn the security guards alive, and shoot machine guns into onlookers.

It is all senseless and nobody seems to have the answers. Where is the disincentive for these bloody animals?

Point given.

But then if we could protect on group of the country why can't we protect both Black and white ? What is the big difference between then and now ?

GavinMannion: not sure what you're asking?

I meant to add that if such a service was compusory, medics wouldn't feel that they were singled out, and keep it to a year.

I believe that Ghana (or somewhere in West Africa anyway) has a scheme like this. Because it is compulsory there isn't resentment, and it is seen as valuable experience.

well if you cant put them back where you found them, then we'll have to deal with them. Death penalty is how i suggest we deal with them

the government made you go to the army so that it could keep the impoverished in their place...townships. there was the death penalty to remove any "trouble" makers.

i feel sorry for you, it seems your drill sergeant did a good job of brainwashing you to think the "correct" way
