I would like to get some opinions. If you had the opportunity to work in either city for the same pay, which would you choose and why?

Are there any members who have lived in both cities? Which did you most enjoy?

Cape Town wins, hands down, for me. Johies is too big, too hectic, has too much traffic, too much crime and too many aggro people and looks ugly. IMO

In JHB you don't live in the city :) Most of the "upperclass" suburbs are clean and pretty looking. I would stay in JHB only because of the people, they not so "clicky".

Cape Town is damn beautiful though.

lived in both and would take CT any day.

Its better in every way. The only people who are clicky are the Cape Townians and there are very few of them left.

Eh? I stay in the upperclass suburbs thank you very much.

What I mean was if you walk around Cape Town City Bowl in the early mornings, you see the cleaners washing the sidewalks and streets.

I have lived in Cape Town or broader Western Cape for 24 years and 6 years in Gauteng. In the 6 years in Gauteng, I have been to more beaches and other tourist attractions in Cape Town then when I stayed there.

Also the drive to work in Gauteng is less stressfull than Cape Town. That N1 drive into town gets worse everytime I get there, but then again we have to pay Sanral to drive on just a bit less conjested highway during peak time.

I also find people nicer up here too, couldn't understand it when people made this comment when I started here, but then again I was already in a group when I lived there. I could only see it when I saw how some of my friends up here struggled when they moved down.

Having lived in both the supposive ugliness of Jhb is quite ignorant. The suburbs are all very clean, green and "hilly". Jhb is also constantly developing and the economy always booming. Also people in Jhb are a really friendly bunch in my observation provided you match their high expectations in proffesionalism and courtesy.

Born in Cape Town, stayed in Jhb for 7 odd years, back in CT since 2004.

People and work wise I'll definitely take Jhb. Quality of life and general well being and place to bring up a family, Cape Town, no question.

They clean the Joburg city centre every night too - it's just that in some places like areas around taxi ranks they never get ahead of the litter bugs.

I live and work simultaneously in both Cape Town and Johannesburg, and have been doing so for years. I grew up in Johannesburg, though. Given the choice, I probably wouldn't spend much time in Johannesburg, to be honest. As far as business goes, I've found it's a myth that Cape Town is "Slaapstad", at least in the software development world. A recent survey of job ads found that there were actually significantly more job ads for developers in Cape Town than in Johannesburg, and certainly there are more start ups and more creatively inclined operations in Cape Town.

What about Johannesburg's "younger" sibling Pretoria? Pretoria is quite a nice place. I find it cleaner than Johannesburg and the people seem friendlier, but it's close enough to Johannesburg that you can drive over (or take a train) if you want to tap into the vast infrastructure that Johannesburg has to offer.

There are few Capetonians left in Cape Town?

Pretoria is nice, but work is relatively scarce. And the JHB/PTA commute gets a big hell no from me.

I grew up and studied in Cape Town. I'm currently in Limpopo, and in the process of moving to Johannesburg (will officially move there next week).

Honestly, I would do anything to move back to Cape Town, but at least we one step closer. Nothing beats Cape Town in summer, going to the beach after work, evening walks on the promenade, and all the outside markets and fairs.

I'm excited to be moving to Jo'burg too, but all I'm looking forward to is the shopping and entertainment.
