Hi, can anyone assist. I am looking to rent a debit/credit card or mobile point of sale machine for an expo this coming weekend making it easier for customers to transact at my stall.
Does any one have any tips and can advise companies to deal in this service,,

Why not just borrow a Nedbank device from a friend/shop owner and enable the multi merchant capability?

Try Capitec. They have lower turnover requirements for getting a device.

Alternatively - how about going beyond debit/credit card machines? Try Snapscan.
It's a South African application developed in Stellenbosch that shoppers install on their smartphone. You (the seller) register with Snapscan and set up your receiving bank account details. A QR code of sorts is produced which uniquely identifies you. You print out the QR code and stick it up at your stand.

Customer wants to buy something to the value of R XXX. He scans your code with the app on his phone, enters the amount and confirms his transaction with a PIN. The money is transferred from his CC to your account. You receive a notification confirming the transaction and VOILA. Payment is done.

Works on even a weak data connection (we had 1 bar MTN 3G signal when we tried it and it still went through) and is nice and quick, and the transaction fees are pretty low. We tested it out at Free Comic Book Day in Cape Town 2 months ago. At least 50% of the stalls were using Snapscan. The rest were cash only.

Thanks so Much AnibugZA
Does this mean both buyer and seller needs the app to transact?
any idea what the fees are?

May be worth looking at Nedbank and ABSA's mobile payment options (ABSA is the pebble and Nedbank has their own smartphone linked mobile card device)?
Alternative is Capitec as their fees and requirements are not (as) excessive as the big 4.

Here's the MyBB article on it:

http://mybroadband.co.za/news/software/102635-snapscan-smartphone-payment-system-launched-in-sa.html

And here's the link to the Snapscan Website.

As the seller you don't have to have the app on your smartphone - you get notified via SMS that the transaction was completed. Buyer obviously has to have the app on their phone + their account with CC set up.
Doesn't take long to set up though.

Supported by Standard Bank, but you don't have to be an SB client to make use of the service or to access your income.
