Decent Firewall

Hey all

Until last night I thought sentech was the suckiest thing ever. It was incredibly slow when it came to torrrents. I was excited when it hit 5k. Browsing was still pretty good and so were downloads with Getright.

I'm running it on my downstairs pc and using ICS to get the net on my laptop upstairs. Now for some reason last night I decided to turn off the poor pc downstairs and bring the modem to my laptop. I have no firewall or anything on this machine and for the first time in bittornado the little light went blue and I got speeds of 12kb +.

Now obviously my firewall is a problem here, zonealarm to be correct because I did some research about bit tornado and apparently the indicator stays yellow when it is firewalled. I have tried to open those ports in the firewall program and I have set bit tornado as a trusted program.

Currently getting 1kb off a torrent now that I have moved the modem back downstairs.

Can anyone give me some sort of idea on
A)how to use zonealarm.
B)A better, easier to use option to zonealarm.

Thanks

Its not your firewall, its the fact that you are not at the station, what happens is that any request for you Torrent program reaches your gateway PC, at the specified port, but the gateway PC does not know what to do with it. So you only get certain requests specified by you and NaTTED THrough.

what you need to do is a little bit more than the standard, open port for torrents, you must also configure port forwarding, to the best of my knowledge on ICS, if you are using win XP ICS, it does have a simplistic feature known as uPNP, which will handle that for you if you have a uPNP compliant app running your torrents, such as bitComet.

Alternatively, when you open the port on ZoneAlarm, (I haven't worked with it, but i'll assume it has a forwarding feature) select port forward, and pipe any requests for that port to your local IP of the 'other' PC.

When using ZoneAlarm on an ICS machine, I found that I needed to go "Firewall|Main|Advanced" and specify "This Computer is an ICS/NAT gateway".
