Deep Cycle Batteries and Battery Housings - where to buy?

Maybe this thread can be used to guide those in need of alternative home power suppliers - i.e. inverter deep cycle batteries and battery housings...

Today, I managed to get some Exide 102Ah maintainance-free, sealed 12V lead calcium (Silver Calcium) batteries from Unnic Midas in Randburg for R999 a piece (incl.) - seemed pretty reasonable considering most places are charging R1500+, if you can get them.

Any thoughts on these? I may go back and get another two if they are good, just in case!

Where else could one try for batteries, as they seem to be fairly scare these days...

Does anyone know where I can find some decent, sturdy metal battery housings for 2 and 4 batteries? I've seen a few around, but they look really k@k and cheap.

That's not bad. Above all it's exactly the right one to buy. The non-sealed ones give off a nasty gas that's not supposed to be indoors.
No idea where you can get housings, though.

For housings perhaps try electronics shops?

If anyone knows about deals like this in Pretoria don't hesitate to post, driving to Johannesburg isn't exactly fun ;)

Try electronics123 in Pretoria (Take Gordon road all the way north until it runs into the mountain) or Communica in Centurion (about 20min from Pta)

How many things can you run on 1 battery?

It depends on the power-rating of the inverter/ups that you use and the power consumption of the "things" you are talking about.

Yeah I've been to both, Communica also has a branch in Pretoria central but I doubt they'll have very good prices on batteries, especially Electronics 123, they're very expensive.

Like a pc, router, tv, decoder. :)

Depends what size psu the pc has. Makes a mother of a difference...

Let's say for arguments' sake your PSU is 400W
Router ~50W
TV ~150W
DSTV 35W

This makes for 635W

You would need a 1000VA (preferably) inverter for this.

Remember even if a PSU is rated for 400w that is only the maximum DC OUTPUT, it doesn't account for inefficiency or the fact that most computer don't draw 400W. The only way to be sure is to meter the actual PC while under maximum load.

Yeah well obviously. But this is the most simple explanation. On top of that, this is the third thread. Why can't people just read similar threads before they go posting their questions that are exactly the same?
