Degradation... Eish

I have noticed that it tends to get better from 21:30 for me but that could just mean that the kiddie who's killing my tower has been sent to bed but who knows..

and after a reboot of the router, it all vanished..

Maybe you guys should try rebooting aka the Microsoft method :D

Poor speeds up to 10 pm seem to be widespread so don't blame it on the poor kid!

I've been on the Telkom 10GB +10GB contract for over 4 years, and always got bad speeds between 7pm to 10pm on weekdays. This was when I was on 3G, not LTE.

So is anything actually being done about these degrading night speeds???

Telkom is very quiet about this. Is there a fix? Call them? This is crazy!

Maybe why 1800MHZ has been LTE enabled - I highly doubt they will publicly admit there is a peak issue though

What's the difference between the 1800MHz vs the 2300 we on now?

With a lower frequency spectrum, you can either get longer coverage range or better coverage on buildings.

Now, the reason part: When an antenna radiates electromagnetic frequencies, it's power at a point reduces as per inverse square law. Simply put the power reduces faster and faster as you go farther and farther.
Now, this reduction is also dependent on the frequencies. The lower frequencies lose power less faster.

So, if an 1800MHz tower can cover about 6km in a sparsely built area, a tower with 900MHz can cover about 9-10km.
Or, the power within a densely populated/built area is reasonably good with a 900 band frequency than with an 1800 band frequency.
Guess, with this inherent property of lower frequencies, it's obvious why companies are ready to pay more for 900 band vs. 1800 band.

Disclaimer: Number are approximate with respect to actuals and ratios. Will try to check and update soon.

Signal should have further range. Above is for 900Mhz vs 1800Mhz but the concept is still the same.

BUT, the available spectrum in their 1800MHZ range is so small that congestion is inevitable as has already been shown in 1800mhz tests shared in the LTE Uncapped thread..

After switching on the 1800MHZ band for LTE and launched the uncapped promotion nationwide, I suspect and believe Telkom has started capping speeds to 10Meg. Whatever I do and with the best signal values for RSRP and S/NR, I cant go above 10meg. I am in Westdene. Anyone in westdene with the LTE uncapped noticed speed degradation?

Hi,

Just want to ask a quick question. We are already on the 20+20GB LTE package, and we are considering moving to the uncapped one...
Right now, we haven't noticed any degrading of speeds, but then again, we only really get online after the kids are in bed, so we might just be missing the peak...

Has anybody moved from capped to uncapped and THEN noticed a huge difference? Just worried that they might change something on our connection when we move, that might trigger these issues...

Although I did notice that people with both capped and uncapped is struggling, so I'm hoping we will miss it...

Not really. Speeds have stayed the same. Not much difference.

Thanks!! So it guess its worth going for it, since we are already happy with our connection.

Now I just have to fight with Telkom to get it :(..... we fall 100m outside their "coverage map", so if I click my address, it says I'm don't qualify for the promotion... and the call center agents cant seem to assist with anything not covered in their FAQ script....

If you stay in Toti area, forget Telkom LTE from 1700-0100. Its just crap.

"Unlimited" LTE actually limited to 4Mbps 100Gb

Just had a look at My Telkom and saw they have permanently capped me at 4 Mbps and after 100Gb they will throttle me to just 128 kbps.I thought we were getting LTE here,my 100Gb+100Gb package gives me roughly 38 Mbps speed.

Something isn't right with that screenshot.... Why is it saying "All Networks" that means if you force it to MTN you will still have access to the net.

Something's not right. Are you sure you are uncapped LTE?

Why is it saying Smart Internet Unlimited and not Smartbroadband Wireless Uncapped?

I think you have the 3G uncapped option instead of the LTE uncapped option :erm:

It should be looking something like this if it's the uncapped LTE deal for R599 or R699 or R799
