Nationalism is not a bad thing, and synonymous with Patriotism. Just because you don't want it to be doesn't make it so once again. Trying to dilute meanings to fit a narrative doesn't make it any different.

The dictionary is not the source of all truth. Nevertheless, you now need to look at what makes nationalism bad. I would argue it is the power of the state.

Nationalism without the state is basically a football team or a bunch of people doing a traditional dance. Nationalism with the state is a government deciding that "its people" are oppressed and will do anything to destroy other nations.
The nation-state is different from both a nation and a state. You can have many nations in one state. South Africa and the US are examples of this, as is most of the world funnily enough.
