Lesufi said the initiative will form part of the province's 2030 vision to put youth at the centre of policy making decisions, as well as the economy.
JOHANNESBURG - The Premier of Gauteng, Panyaza Lesufi says the Department of Social Development is set to launch a new initiative to rehabilitate youth addicted to the notorious street drug nyaope.

Lesufi said the initiative will form part of the province's 2030 vision to put youth at the centre of policy making decisions, as well as the economy.

He made the announcement on Friday when he unveiled his new executive in Midrand.

The Department of Social Development, now led by Mbali Hlophe, will spearhead the programme.

Lesufi said youth addicted to substances will be taken off the streets and housed on a state farm for six months before being reintegrated into society.

“The Department of Health will give them medication. The Department of Education will assess them. If they are ready to go to school, we send them to school. We carry the bill as the state. Those that are talented in sport will do (sport). We want onward...we will kill this thing of nyaope. We can’t surrender our children and young people to nyaope.”

It's really sad to see people using nyaope. I wish we were a wealthier country where more addicts could have access to something better like cocaine.
Huge issue in my area...these Nyope things are just zombies and all they do all day is roam the town and steal what they can for the next fix...broad daylight or in the middle of the night...doesnt matter to them....
And you can catch them and give them a hiding and they feel and know nothing...
Cops cant/wont do anything...

Im all in favour of a bullet for the dealers...eliminate this issue first...

Also an issue in my area. We had a house in our suburb burn down last year - it had over ten drug-addicted adults and a bunch of kids living there. Hellish conditions.

Maybe they should get it in them to pay orphanages the grant they are due first. Yes, because that is what every junkie wants to do change. Out of every 10 people in rehab you will be lucky to find 2 who have any real desire to change. Rehab with a few exceptions are a massive exercise in futility.

Does it cause permanent damage to the brain? It's a real scourge, with young teenagers addicted.

They should make drugs free then there wouldn't be any crime and no gangs.
