Despite being insolvent, the SA Post Office wants to take on South Africa's top couriers

The South African Post Office wants to become a prominent player in the country’s courier industry, despite the fact that the Auditor-General has declared it commercially insolvent.

In its 2020 annual report, Post Office chairperson Tia van der Sandt said that they intended to expand their ecommerce offering to provide small and medium businesses in the country “unrivalled access” to e-commerce.

But we got courier services in the first place because the PO is incompetent.

In order to get into the courier business, they would need to not be incompetent.

They could do this in one of two ways.
Either by renaming the post office to a more traditional, less racist term, or get some Cubans to run it,

I left SA in 2003. Wasn't there an issue then with Postnet? So SAPO just want to take over the courier market. That's a very socialist way of doing it. I don't think these guys have the way and means just to deliver services. They can't just jump right in either, they don't have the expertise to do it either. Most of your SOE's are bankrupt anyhow.

This is so typical SOE its not funny. They state they do have the infrastructure and they do have courier capability but no one uses it because they are useless. So their answer to that is for someone to give them lots of money. Not build trust with what they have and grow organically. Just throw a bunch of money at us and hope it all works out.

PO is the only reason why I stopped ordering from Wish and AliExpress. Sick and tired of packages disappearing, and that attitude (while looking at the cellphone) of doing me a favor by serving me. They must just vrek, the sooner the better

Zapiro's archival cartoon from 20 October 2014 - So, no change there then... View attachment 1061375

It's not so much that no-one noticed, but instead had to make another plan to get mail delivered and then never went back. I remember I was expecting a kickstarter delivery around that time that shipped here and then never arrived. I never used the post office again after that. I worked around the Post Office, just like everyone else did. Once the strike was over, the only mail I still received (even now) is my from Sanral. Nothing else. No-one uses the Post Office any more.

Just like that poor rusty post box in the picture which represents the Status Quo of the Post Office. SHAME.

If the post office wins, all that will happen is that couriers will possibly slightly reduce prices on the 2kg weight class and weight padding will become a more regular thing.

And the blackmarket courier trade will explode for parcels less than 1kg. It is game over for the post office, they will lose this one no matter which way they go. This will become another industry the government will lose control over and also lose all tax revenue.
