I've had my car (VW Polo 1.9TDI - 2003) for about 3 years & have never had to put oil in, its always lasted until my next service.
This time though i haven't made it, so i called VW & they say i should use 505.01 and will be able to get it at garages. I've tried about 10 garages & a motor spares shop & cant find the stuff, they all just have a standard diesel oil (15W-40)

Can I use this oil or should I carry on searching for it?

The standard garage diesel oil hasn't done anything to my TDi. I fill up at Total if that's any help. Whatever they use seems to be fine

Yes, a diesel is a pain in the ass when it comes to maintenance and upkeep. I'm not sure the economy is worth the hassle, unless you have a maintenance plan.
