Howzit guys,

I've been trying for the last few months to drop some weight and get a bit healthier, but due to the numerous ways of weight loss and hordes of advice and opinions on the interwebs, i got a bit side tracked.

I started of cutting out all carbs/sugars, which helped in me not putting on anymore weight, but not really losing anything either.

Then i went a bit more drastic, i cut down my daily calorie intake to less than 1000 cal/day
That actually worked amazingly, i lost like 4 or 5 kilos in like two weeks :wtf:
BUT, i am wiser than i was than, and i know that most of that weight would have been water and muscle, and not really fat. Plus, it is extremely unsustainable and very unhealthy..

So now, i have taken a new approach, ive been to a dietician, who developed a well rounded, calorie reduced, eating plan, that is sustainable.
She basically took my normal foods that i eat and properly portioned them and specified what to cut down on and what to eat more off, and for the first time in months im actually eating carbs!

I've been following this plan for about a month now, and along with this i have been gyming 4 times a week, mainly strength training with some cardio, more focus on strength for now to build up my muscle, and then toning/endurance after i'm more comfortable at the gym.

When i started i was around 87Kg, 27 BMI (1.78m tall), now after like two months, im still 85.6kg, 24 BMI ~ BUT my muscles have grown noticeably larger and ive been losing centimeters, mainly around my waist~.

My goal is to lose my tummy, and build up muscle around my body, aiming to be around 80kg.

My question is, is the weight being lost counteracted by the muscle being put on? (hence the fairly constant weight.)
Is it do-able? how long should will it take to lose 6kg? and any other tips.

Appreciate it!

Cheers:)

Sounds like you are on the right track. You say you can see noticeable muscle growth and that is probably why you are not losing lots of weight.

Just note that you can't just 'lose your tummy fat', it's up to your body where it loses fat and unfortunately for most people the stomach is the first place to put on fat and the last place to lose..

Weight is a good thing to watch but the cm around the waist are more important IMO. I also need to loose some and in the post I have found a bit more exercise and a balanced eating plan are the biggest helps. Also, although it may sound strange loosing 0.5KG a week is probably better than 1KG a week as the 0.5KG a week is more likely to be due to lifestyle change and hence will stay off. Seen many people get amazing results loosing 1-2KG a week on some amazing diet only to gain it all back as there is no way to maintain these crazy diets long term.

Yea i agree, the cms lost make a big diff, you feel yourself being alot leaner/slimmer.

Also the ability to maintain this eating lifestyle is just as crucial, you dont wanna crash and burn and then have to start from scratch again.

The best thing you can do when you start weight training is to stop weighing yourself. Kg and BMI are no longer relevant. Just keep going until you look good. Remember, you are undertaking a change in lifestyle. You have succeeded in the hardest part. Now just wait for the results to show themselves.

Mmmm I need to see a dietician, I also have cut out sugar and carbs and while I'm not putting on any weight I'm not losing anything.

Can anyone recommend dieticians in Cape Town around Pinelands area ?

Welcome to the club. Some people tend to bulk and other tone more. I tend to do the former, therefore I had to tone down by exercise to mostly cardio and only ONE day a week strength. I got myself to 'lose' 3kgs, but then started to gain again.

Cardio is great and i understand its benefits, its just so damn boring, and coming from someone who is not very patient, spending 20 min on a bicycle/treadmill is quite a mission.. :erm:

To answer your question, yes.

To lose weight you need to do more cardio. Start running more. Try do 5km each session.

How much difference will this actually make? From what i have seen, by changing my eating, that should actually make me drop more weight..

might be naive in my understanding, but don't you lose more weight from eating less, than exercising more?
e.g. eating 1 sandwich less a day ~ 400 cal, compared to running for 10 min ~ 100 cal..

For cardio do Interval Training. You can do it for less time and get far more benefits.

This!

I can agree, ive been doing it to a certain extent, for instance, when im on the treadmill, i run at maximum speed for a minute or two, then drop to a lower speed, recover, then up the speed again.

Would that be regarded as interval training?

Yeah. I try run for around 30 secs as fast as I can then recover for 2 mins or so.

I'm talking about strength vs cardio exercise. Strength builds muscle which actually is more dense(and heavier) than fat.

ah ok, so in essence, if im not really trying to lose weight, but to lose fat, then will strength training still help, or still cardio?
From my understanding, the more muscle you put on, the higher your metabolism goes, in order to feed the increase in muscle, which should therefore start eating away at your fat deposits?

yes? no?

You can not really build musle while reducing the fat. If you want mass you will be eating excessively well, so well that stored fat won't be used.

Go for a protein based without carbs for your pre and post work outs. Then one week hit the gym hard, next week hit it lightly with swimming off days and cycling. Remember we have 45 minutes before our muscles go backwards and can no longer gain.

At least that is how i am doing it and i could be highly mistake. Removing the excess fat is all about diet though
