I apologise if this question has been asked before.

Is their any difference in the service of a R680.00 Residential Account compared to a R800.00 Business Account, other than the price of course?

Nope, not that I can see anyway. We were forced to go with a business account since our phone line is owned by the company we rent our house from (we're ex-pats). Even though we pay the bill and that bill comes directly to us, Telkom obviously saw an oppurtunity and took it, which means it's costing us more.

I was under the impression that perhaps the business account would offer better customer service or a faster installation date, but sadly that's not the case. The only difference is the price, that's it.

Kekekekeke. Mad. [:D]

Good One.
So if the service is the same, then Telkom is overcharging the Business Clients or Undercharging the Residential Customers. Which is odd as all are capped at 3 gigs, so no benefit applies to either option. But ooops sorry I forgot...Mad you mentioned its Telkom. Maybe thats the difference. Ermmm...."Meneer, rules is rules, buy another account". Hau?

Correct me if I am wrong, but I think I read somewhere else on the forums if you are a business customer they have to respond within 24 hours when you report a fault on your line.

Yeah right! I got a business account and 24 hour response has never happened. As everyone else says it just costs more, thats it!

Cheers

Apparently business installations have priority during the day and home then takes priority at night and on w/e's. Think I read that somewhere on the forum too.

I think perhaps it would make a good addition to the ICASA complaint - businesses being charged more for the exact same service.

I stand corrected, but it is in the ICASA complaint.

I dont see whats wrong with charging more for better support?

Business gets 24/7 support AFAIK.

Pick your battles...

99% of businesses who would have DSL are closed between 5PM and 8AM anyways so it's a waste of money. It should be an option to pay for that extra support if you want it or need it.

It should be 24/7 for residential users tho cos they're at home at all kinds of hours.

On the overcharging/undercharging issue.

When I had my line installed, I noticed the form the techie was filling in to report it as completed described my line as "ADSL sub-rate."

Apparently, a business line would be "ADSL basic rate." Of course, basic rate and primary rate are terms normally used to describe ISDN connections, with basic rate being two 64kbps B-channels and one 16kbps D-channel, and primary rate being 30 64kbps B-channels and one 64kbps D-channel.

Telkom, however, have chosen to also use the "basic rate" term to describe their business ADSL connections.

In Beurocrat, this means, business ADSL is the most basic ADSL connection they offer (of course, it's the only connection the offer,) and the residential "sub-rate" line is a basic rate line at a discount.

BTTB, to answer your question, Telkom are undercharging the residential customers.

It's the same service though, regardless.

Or overcharging the business clients. [:)] In actual fact Telkom is overcharging for basically everthing. Thats why MyADSL exists. No?

It is obvious that nobody know for sure what the difference is between "home" and "business" service.

Ask the helpdesk, and they are just as clueless.

Ask the people when you order, and they are just as clueless. Please try to tell them you don't want a business connection on a business line unless they can provide you with proof on paper that the additional cost will provide you with superior service[:)]

Nowhere on the Telkom website I could find at logical spot any explanation.

At best everything about this issue on this list is speculation.

So much for Telkom in a transparent democratic South Africa

South Africa needs World Class Broadband at World Competitive Prices.

telkom don't need to explain anything, the unfortunate thing is that they can do this and no one can or will stop them.ICASA is a joke and they prob make more money in there back pockets from telkom than they do from there salaries. Telco in South Africa is Proudly African ie. Proudly F'ed up.
