Difference between Router and Software connection

My ADSL is connected 24/7 through my router, so no software or dial-up is required, however, my one friend also has ADSL and he dial up to Telkom via the software provided, I think he may be gertting faster speeds than me by almost 15KB/s is this possible?

Are there any cons when connected to ADSL as I am?

The router is most likely not your problem. Issues you might want to look at is congestion or impending cable failure on your network, or a slow PC.

Connecting through a router is preferred to a software connection.
