I recently upgraded to a 4mb line from a 384k line, and once the upgrade went through my Billion 7202GR2 only synced at 640k down, however when i plug my Telkom 5102G router in, it syncs at 1024k down.
The upload sync speed is fine at 384k on both routers..

The connections on both are stable, and on another note the line has no dial tone, but im not sure if that affects anything...

Emailed billionsa a week ago, no response as yet...
Telkom still trying to fix the dial tone...

But how is it possible for the almost double increase just by using the telkom router?

can you provide the other line specs aswell

SNR down and up
Line attenuation down and up

i've seen BIG SNR diffs due to some router chipsets being nicely compatible to the DSLAM card chipsets....but not sync rates.

yeah, quite a difference in that as well...
with the telkom:
Line att: Down-50
SNR: Down-21

with the billion (approx):
Line att: Down 59-61
SNR: Down 6-8 (never more than 10)

The up rates were pretty much identical..

did you apply for up-to-4meg and left it at that - or did they set you to a static 1024 profile?

i know that on a 1024 profile - minimum sync speed is 640 - 200% sure of it - but thats when your line can't keep stable.

you can always try this program for the 5102G and plot a graph of your SNR values for say a few hours and post it on photobucket/imageshack.

^^ that posting is 100% correct of yours - typical chipset compatiblity....its EXACTLY like that with the netgear 834 vs the 834GT <-- being better

i don't think the dialtone has got anything to do with it...plot the graph and post your results...should be VERRRRY interesting

i applied for the 4mb upgrade and left it at that, im not aware if they set me to a specific profile. Will call them to find out though..

I'll try the plotting of the SNR..

The weird thing is that the 5102G is also made by Billion, so how different can the chipset be?

Edit:
Ok, just called telscum, i was on a 1024 profile, they switched me to a 3mb profile and it synced at 3mb fine
Line att: Down-51.5
SNR: Down-13.5

Ok, phoned telkom again, now my line is at 4mb
But when i plug in my billion router, it only syncs at 640k, plug telkom back in and it syncs at 4096.

Here's the rates now at 4mb:
Line att: Down-49.5
SNR: Down-11.5

hmmm

but with the billion at 640k - do u get the speed of 640k or faster?

sound to me like you should do a firmware upgrade of that router or if done already - a rollback.

if that doesn't help - router not 100% well

yeah, thats what i was thinking, i did an upgrade a while back, to v1.09 (i think it shipped with 1.07)

But with the billion i'm always syncing at 640k, no more, no less
Yet its 4096 with the telkom...

Time to send another email to billionsa

on the speed test it showed around 500k
on a download max was around 35

Got a response from billion, they want me to courier the router to them for testing :/
