Hand dug wells are still being constructed and used

This is how they do it in the Czech Republic
Let the concrete pipes sink in under their own weight -- notice the spirit level .. ( and the HILTI )
Interesting that there is no cement used on the pipe joins ?

Beautiful house / yard -- wonderful old motor transport ... :)

Wow, it must have been really uncomfortable working in such a confined space. o_O

Looks like they used a sealant when they stacked the rings. :)

It looked to me as it was only the top few, perhaps to prevent runoff water entering the well?
It looked at first like expansion foam to me, but then it didn't expand!:)

I must say I found it very intriguing and watched the whole thing, it seemed the entire family was involved.
I was wondering how long it took them though?

My hand dug well I did nearly two years ago is still going strong. I'm using on average 25kl of water from it and and have it plumbed into the house. Wish I had the concrete rings but there were none available when I did mine.

I've more than recovered what it cost me with the current water tariffs. Current savings is over R30k.

That would have been to keep seepage out of the well sealing the top few rings.
But notice the soil conditions definitely not that easy in the Karoo.

How deep did you go?
And where in the country?
