Digital TV migration gets firm milestones

I wonder if the govt. will change the laws so that we don't have to produce a license in order to purchase a TV set. Since analogue tuners will no longer work, then the TV license tax no longer applies to TV sets, and only to the digital decoders, surely?

How will these STBs work? Will you need a dish for it?

I use my normal aerial that has always picked up SABC/ETV. You might need a booster depending on the strength of the signal. DTT isn't very forgiving of a poor signal.

Nice background noise to some nice breakfast. It means nothing if anything can be unilaterally altered or postponed at a whim by the DoC.

Pretty cynical, but always possible with Gov. Pretty awesome that they have committed dates and deliverables, we'll see what happens at the end of the month when the first one is due.

Digital TV is already up and running, and been running for 2 years already - they only need to expand coverage which is happening.

STB control mechanism to prevent signal piracy and to protect subsidised boxes from leaving the country.

So don't bother getting a DVB-T2 card for your HTPC, or expect to use any digital tuner built in to any TV, in other words?

"The broadcasters have also registered Multiview as the brand name for the free to air bouquet."

Ahhhhh smell the irony in that sentence. Guess they couldn't call it Freeview like the rest of the english speaking world because the SABC is the country's biggest (read: mandatory) subscription broadcaster.

Anyone aware of what's to happen to Vivid (SABC satellite channels) after 2013? Will that service continue for where there will be no DTT terrestrial coverage? Will a new STB (decoder) be needed?

DTT is the biggest waste of money ever. We have had digital TV here in SA since 1995 so why not just switch off terrestrial TV all together. Satellites to a perfect job of broadcasting and we could really use terrestrial broadcasting for low latency two way communications like cellular or data networks.

Bad news mate, they canning the Vivid service as part of Sentech's restruction. Considering the law suits from both commercial broadcasters outside S.A for loss of ad revenue due to weak encryption of SABC channels & UEC who were suppose to make the new Vivid stb with the latest encryption keys as a overhaul of the service. With the latter lawsuit it maybe around for awhile and could transform into a freesat service opps I mean "multisat" service. But considering the SABC's financial woes and Sentech trying to stay out of the red & etv shacking up as a content provider for multichoice don't hold your breath.

It just some more bureaucratic bullsh#t

And here I thought the Aussie DTV switch over was overly prolonged and complicated by bureaucratic retardation ... Glad to know we still Numero Uno on that front !:whistling:

+100 - we could just stream online anyway or watch podcasts of shows, Youtube already does live streaming and Netflix could give us premium content.

Imagine all that bandwidth:wtf:
