Excluding CO2 emissions, diesels still have a way to go in terms of noxious gases they emit - especially carbon monoxide (CO), hydrocarbons (HC), nitrogen oxides and particulate matter.

The last 400 or so cars on this list are all diesels.

Hmm.

Anyone remember that car ad (think it was for Merc) where the hedgehogs could take off their gasmasks as a diesel went by??

I always though diesels were cleaner even though they produce more visible pollution...

Generally they produce less CO2 by virtue of the fact that they are more fuel efficient. But it's only very fancy diesels with particulate filters, exhaust gas recirculation and/or urea injection that can even come close to petrol engines in terms of other emissions.

Very interesting link. Thanks:)

Guess the cost of diesel is going to go up again then- somes sort of environmental tax.
