Facts are facts, and not a single 1 of the people running that company at the top are going to vacate their seats to "address the imbalances of the past".
They're going to keep their cushy jobs and push this directive down the line to others.
No one need to vacate their seats, not the ones at the top or those down the line.

By the looks of that memo Dischem management thinks the fine is a very real possibility and it's that fear that is driving this action.

None of these actions would be necessary if the laws didn't exist. This decision does not exist in a vacuum.
Not even a law.

Good for you.
Strange that you could do this yourself, but then also pretend Dischem is doing the right thing?
Seems contradictory.
I think he has said Dischem have not choice if they want to remain in business. If the NHI becomes reality then the likes of Dischem would have to assimilate or be destroyed as procurement rules will definitely look at equity law compliance.

What's worse, a fine or a demographic boycotting you?

Considering the fine is 10% of your turnover I'd say the fine.

I also doubt an entire demographic will boycott them. I won't for example, because I understand that the pressure for this change ultimately comes from our government. Every major company in the country is experiencing that same pressure.

They will probably take their chances with the demographic boycott, not being compliant with the laws is just very untenable for their business, sure a fine is not the only thing they need to worry about.

What happens if they don't pay it?

We are fortunate because of the size of our company to fly under the radar.
We are also only one of two companys providing our product in the whole of South Africa, people can't go anywhere else to source the product.
They are stuck with us (and our competitor - who is also not BEE compliant).
But for Dischem, who is a huge national Franchise... they can't fly under the radar.
They have to deal with the devil and do their best to comply.... or pay the fines (lost 10% of their revenue every year).
So it's that.... or vote out the ANC.
Do you see their Dilemma?

i still dont get why this is such big news -- its happening in all big corporates its just not publicized.

i work in one where you are not even allowed to interview white candidates the cvs gets filtered out right at application point.

internally you are not allowed to promote or hire whites/Indians, you have to bring in black talent.
and if you are a black female ... chaching!!! $$$$$$$

Boycott and go where, Clicks/Checkers/Spar/PnP where they have to comply with the same laws?

I'm sure some will say the local pharmacy, and that's fine for medication.

But toiletries, groceries and baby stuff - there's no way people are going to boycott chain stores and pay more in this economic climate. They'll end up back at Dischem, like they ended up back at Spur...

So it seems many companies are standing up to them

"According to legal firm Webber Wentzel, the commission saw fewer compliance reports submitted in 2021, with the current data uploads decreasing by 76% from 5,818 in 2019 to 1,373 in 2021."

I haven't excused it. I've explicitly stated that I don't agree with it. Skin colour should never be a factor in anything.

I simply feel one's ire should be directed at the people setting the racist policy in the first place.
