In that case, it was badly broadcast internally because these matters are directed through company policy. Just checked Dirk Herman's Twitter,

Dis die groot vraag. Is die brief teruggetrek of is die beleid teruggetrek?

Translated:

That's the big question. Has the letter been withdrawn or has the policy been withdrawn?

they should post Dis-Chem's legal response. In the case it is company policy, there is no point in withdrawing the letter because the policy would also need to be withdrawn. The letter is irrelevant.

The only reason I can think that the CEO got involved, hence publishing the letter, is because they get way more white classed applicants than black classed applicants, but it is still HR which will handle this internally. This is unusual, but perhaps a hands-on situation I won't know.

Was it an informal enquiry? Because I am positive no one at ABSA would have that conversation with you in a formal conversation or correspondence.
Informal obviously but it was with someone I trust and used to work with who was the person hiring for that spot.

"This kind of rest wake is illegal too."

WTF does that even mean?

Badly translated, this is what he said,

Die soort rastwak is onwettig ook.

Who is Dirk Hermann? And why is this his "point of view"??

He is Solidarity's union leader. They petitioned Dischem.

I still say this is BS until a verified retraction from Dis-Chem is released in the press.

According to Solidarity they received a response, but the response hasn't been made public.

You should not waste your time applying to bee positions anyway. Unless, it expressily says non bee in the ad don't bother.

We all know its the government who wants it to be that way, no point in rubbing it in peoples faces in my opinion.

If its physically written you can challenge it. If it's whispers then it's he said she said

Not all BEE policies are publicly transparent. I do contract work where there are underlying empowerment policies, you don’t know about until you are onboard, and I know how some business work internally. Not my place to scrutinise, we operate in a country where there are targets and people in business need to achieve those targets.

The same with a small business which has an exemption status, should you grow, you would need to grow towards compliance.

Why the silence from Dis-Chem on this? If it was a fake and this is all over social media I would have expected them to send out a media statement to put out the fires. Or do they simply don't care?

I think that is the oddest part. Its the HR's statement to make, not the CEO. If anything this would a have been a private chat between the CEO and Head of HR, then an internal discussion within HR on how to address the issue.

You would expect though - that a big retailer like this wouldn't have this problem as they would be tracking the numbers all the time and intervening as needed.
If this is how they roll out policies/change in their organisation then quota's are the least of their problems.

Because we know the Clicks reaction.....

Its possible that lower management are not following HR advice and just hiring whites and they have way too many white managers
So the CEO had to step in and send out a strongly worded letter
Thats if the letter is real which im leaning towards

Hiring should go though HR - so speaks to a massive failure there.

Sounds very reactive if legit... so speaks to failure within the organisation.

Jeepers forget the racism, if that letter is real I'm considering not shopping at Dischem because they have a CEO that uses terms like "This is for real" in official documents.

There are private companies having this as policy too, including small enterprises. That what did surprise me with this incident is how it is being circulated internally which hints at Dischem not having the desired candidates to meet their targets otherwise I don't see why the CEO would get involved, but that is such a poor memo that I question their board decisions.

As I pointed out in this thread, some empowerment policies aren’t even transparent, and there have been court cases against such 'hidden' policies.

There are also enterprises parading their high-level scorecards, /cough Amazon, MS... they like these campaigns, and these campaigns are well received by the broader public.

Then you have empowerment policies like with ICASA promoting new ownership rules, and it is being advocated by large enterprises. It is the small to medium enterprises who have their voices shut down.

As much as this is spurred on by ANC policies, it does have its 'private' support. I read many business articles where businesses take a stand to harden their BEE credentials. That is a conscious decision.

Renaldo should also know best, that should the DA ever come to power that they won't do away with BEE.

The most telling aspect is that not a single media outlet has reported on this, not even scrutinised Solidarity. Maroela Media did publish Dirk Hermann's letter to Ivan Saltzman, but Maroela Media belongs to the Solidarity movement.

Clearly this is an issue, so irrelevant, that the media isn't bothered by it ;)

All Dischem has to do is to ignore Solidarity. Remember people, Spur is still around.
