Lessons in racism #4,288: Last week, the (founder) CEO of Dis-Chem, a South African chain of Pharmacies, announced that in order to improve the company's diversity ratios, he was imposing a temporary restriction on the hiring or promotion of white people in the company. In fact, it was even less than that: he merely said that all such staffing decisions needed to be personally approved by him.
The reason for this is that although Dis-Chem is one of the better diversity employers in South Africa, when looked at in total across all 20,000 or so employees (majority black/POC and women staff), they are not quite that diverse when looking at management and senior leadership. This is true in many South African companies, where white men account for nearly two thirds (63%) of all senior management and executive leadership in the country (yes, read that stat again! To be specific, this is measured across all non-government organisations that are required to measure and report on diversity - so mostly large companies).
Of course, racists lost their minds.
Now, Dis-Chem could probably have been a little less on the nose in the way they did this (although the CEO's memo was intended to be internal only). And there is some argument that such a blanket policy (it is NOT a "ban") is probably technically illegal (and might be challenged in court by said racists) - Dis-Chem could achieve want they want to without such a heavy-handed policy.
But, what they're doing is what every company is supposed to have been doing for the past quarter century! And, like Dis-Chem, most companies have been engaged in window dressing and/or playing a statistics numbers game at lower levels, without engaging in proper structural change throughout their organisations. The number of board rooms and Exec suites I work with that are overwhelmingly white is astounding. (The same is true in other sectors: for example, staff rooms at top SA schools remain stubbornly white too). So, well done to Dis-Chem for identifying and dealing with the REAL diversity issue head on.
Which leads me to the graph I have attached. Last week, fake photos of empty Dis-Chems were doing the rounds. A quick analysis of the metadata behind these photos showed they were old, and taken after hours. Then, photos of a "plunge" in the Dis-Chem share price was shared, as if proving the market didn't like the move. Those graphs had the axis markers removed, so you couldn't see that it was actually less than a 2% drop in a week when the markets themselves dropped by much more (China's leadership changes saw global market drops all of last week).
So, my graph below shows the Dis-Chem share price for the last month. It's currently at its highest levels in that time. Seems like the market is quite happy with Dis-Chem.
Dis-Chem is my pharmacy of choice. Friendly, efficient and knowledgable staff (of all races), with good technology and great service. Keep up the good work. Please get more POC into management, and continue to support our economy and employ more people (as many POC as you need, and then back to around 9% white people once you've got the balance right). And my fellow South Africans, let's keep trying to build the WHOLE country together, and not just focus on our little part of it.
Finally, racists, please take a seat. We don't need to hear your whiny little voices now... or anytime really.
