Disappearing airtime is still real – and we have proof

MTN Prepaid users can also block premium-rated services charges, by:

  • Dialing *136*5#, select Content Services, then select Manage Premium Rated Services, then select PRS Charges, then select Block PRS Charges.
Thanks, did this.

“Click-jacking fraud is a major issue and we understand this to be a global issue that occurs only on MTN’s network. We are currently introducing a number of ways to monitor, protect, and put an end to these unscrupulous fraudulent subscriptions.”

*whistle smiley*

The only way to stop this is for ICASA to require WASP to be an opt-in service that is required to be disabled by default

Guys where can I take my complain too if I was misled by phone specs on website the hardware dont support same features as on paper/website

And what's this business of MTN taking away your R5 recharge if you don't use it?

Used to regularly have random amounts disappear when I started using Vodacom.

Mtn makes so much money from these WASP, that I doubt they will do anything to combat it.

How long did it take them last time to acknowledge that LTE data even when idle takes airtime?

No real incentive from Mtn side to prevent airtime disappearing.

If there was a way of seeing your airtime constantly as a widget, I'd think differently.

Fnb has that, why can't Mtn do such a thing?

Another eg2505 gem. :sneaky:

Not true - Read the article next time.

“This type of fraud is prevalent on smartphones, where a user may mistakenly click on a banner that is linked to a bot which mimics the behaviour of the customer and approves the opt-in and double opt in requests without the customer knowing,” said MTN. "
...or not

I really do think the MYBB journalists are toothless and maybe paid hacks to these companies. So they just accepted MTNs answer ? If they were all new sims in 4 identical phones , how it is that only the MTN sim got hijacked.

Why the fsck haven't they investigated what went wrong on that MTN Nokia 5 ? I need to just stop reading their articles. Most of them are pointless.

I agree with MTN on this. Wasp have dirty tricks. Each time there are rules to wasps work on ways to bypass it.

As I mentioned in the other thread you don't need to click on any sms link to double opt in. The wasp sends a sms to your smartphone and depending on your messaging apps default setting the "load preview" option might be enabled by default so as soon as you open the sms the app loads the preview from the link in the sms and subscribes you without you even knowing.

To prevent this you need to revoke internet access permission in the app settings and disable load we previews in the messaging app.

For MTN customers you also need to disable the Premium Rate Services in the ussd menu then you are sorted.

No.

There's nothing unusual about a coincidence... it happens. What happened was the MTN number had been recycled no doubt and was signed up before it got recycled. That's not an MTN specific problem. As for MyBB just accepting their answer, what did you expect them to do, go to court? They wrote an unbiased article that you the reader can take what you want from it. The decision of which way to think is all yours lol.

MTN claims it was signed up for on the 26 August? Numbers don't get recycled that quickly.

It needn't be signed up from the phone or sim. There's a thread in here that I posted years ago where you simply pass anyone's cell number through to a URL to sign that number up for services. It's illegal but hey, who's stopping them?

A bit like this:
https://mybroadband.co.za/forum/thr...-deduct-money-from-random-cell-phones.350310/
Add in an extra bit from a PC browser and you can fool the server into believing it has already detected your MSISDN
http://mobilewap1.oit.co.za/?c=206&msisdn=27841942222
In this case the number is 084-194-2222 with the country code 27 at the front. Its a call centre for the company performing this ripoff. Of course you could also use their fax number (27.86.525.7845) and they'd be none the wiser.

So there is still one culprit.. Mtn being naughty
Lets call it what it is - THEFT.
Someone needs to go to jail.
Where's ICASA when you need them?
Y’ello. Your Subscription Service to MTN Fantasy football has been cancelled. Please dial *123# for an overview of MTN Subscription Services.
FTFY.

Why is MTN pretending this is a third party issue????
All the services are MTN internal services designed to steal money from customers.
MTN needs to go to jail for stealing.
Where's ICASA when you need them?
This kind of behavior by MTN is exactly why Nigeria is imposing a $5.2 billion fine.
