Why do you have to pay in so much? I had to pay in just over R1000 in SPG to then get the R5000 ATB.

I find that hard to believe. As far as I know the SPG is 2x your MSA amount.

EDIT: Could also be that you're on a more expensive plan, or that you had previously paid for stuff yourself that ate into the SPG.

EDIT2: Apparently SPG is calculated as Annual Threshold - MSA. So if the Annual Threshold on your plan is R6000 and your MSA is R2200 then your SPG is in theory R3800, though it is calculated as you go along. My SPG is currently R4054.92 because my AT is R6000 and they've paid R1561.08 from my MSA so far plus I've paid in a few times already making up the rest.

Anything major you need done in hospital will cost R100 000's. You may be paying in 14k a year, but in 20 years time, that's R280 000 which is only one open heart surgery or kidney transplant. You are paying for all the sick people who have more than one major health treatment in their lives. It is better to have a 'well known' medaid, as doctors and hospitals are more willing to trust them.

The problem is that private healthcare is horrendously expensive because our public health care is about as good as sawing your own leg off with a rusty butter knife. We shouldn't need private medaid if our governemt had a brain cell to share.

I completely agree that certain medaids are a ripoff, but I have yet to find the holy grail of medical aids - they are all expensive.

Which is why I'll still have a hospital plan.

I think we all realise though that medical aid/health insurance in this country is nowhere near the level we require, nor is it what you receive overseas. Government needs to step in and take hold of the situation.

I'd rather the government stayed out of it TBH. Any government involvement is likely to lead to them trying to get those of us that are already paying extra for medical aid/private healthcare to further subsidise the public system and those it supports.

The basic problem is that advanced healthcare is expensive and those of us on medical aid are effectively paying twice, once in taxes and again for private care.
