Vitality is pretty lame in my experience, with the only exception being the gym. Vitality food points are worth sweet buggerall really - I get maybe r60/month back on that. I never make use of any of the other features and I always feel pressured to keep my points up for some bloody reason or other. That said, the gym benefit is quite significant for us - including the cost of Vitality, minus what we get back on food points, we pay around r600/month for the whole family at Virgin. So, point being, just discount every other supposed benefit, and focus on the value of the gym membership discount.

I don't gym and I am Vitality and it is worth it for me. 12 return flights to CPT -35% is quite signaficant in one year. When they had that 499 special two years back, I flew twice with just my discovery miles.

There's quite a few benefits to vitality that is not very visible though. The obvious ones are the Kulula / PnP / Woolies type of discounts , i actually use the SterKinekor discount alot and then there's the gym benefit (which i don't use).

However it's clear Discovery wants you entrenched in their multitude of products, so alot of the benefits is within the actual products. Simple example, you get a direct discount on your disability insurance premium based on your vitality status. On their invest/life insurance products they also have this thing where you get money back after x-years , the amount based on your vitality status. Also with the medical aid, you also get additional "money" (or shall i call it "credits"?) into your medical savings account based on your vitality status and that Healthy Food thing .

I think Discovery's problem is probably the fact that they've created this ecosystem of products with alot of complexity surrounding their "loyalty" rewards , so much so that no one really understands or know what they really get and whether they actually save money. I still believe their whole discovery card program is a bit illusive on savings as you pay a fortune for the card itself per year , yet have to jump through all kinds of hoops to get any real discounts (which may not actually cover the cost of having the card).

Although, i think vitality has its benefits, i'm not yet convinced with this whole discovery miles thing of theirs, that still does not seems to be worth the effort compared to ebucks.

It seems like everyone else is maximising their Vitality memberships much more than I am.

It was half a day of reading on there website of what I should do to get the maximum out of it.

The -35% on the flights is also not that good though as Mango is cheaper than Kulula most of the time, but with the discount it still makes it worthwile to have vitalily. Also you have to get to Diamond as soon as possible.

@diabolus The miles is worth it if you swipe your card for more than R3000 a month. I pay nothing cash any more, and only swipe my discovery card. Also not having money in my wallet saves me a few rand where I would just pull out a R20 to pay for something small. No I think about it if I have to swipe. I know others have a problem that is the other way around to my thinking.
