So I was on Tiger Brands medical aid for a while but had to move, had a choice between Discovery or Momentum. Decided to go with Discovery due to them offering a bunch of other things along the way.

My issue is, I am on the Essential Smart Plan to start off and I see they only allow R110 off eye tests and no cover on any prescription lenses or anything related.

Does anybody know what plan for Discovery would cover it?

Their website and details barely mention anything until you finally sign up.

Any plan that has a medical savings attached to it.. they will only cover glasses from medical savings..

But, how that works:

If plan A has no medical savings and plan Ab does have, the difference in the monthly cost between the two plans is used as your medical savings for the year:

Plan A: 100 Rand a month
Plan Ab: 150 Rand a month

Bot exactly the same, the only difference being the medical savings..

50 times 12 = 600, so for the year you have R 600 for your medical savings and this is allocated upfront at the start of the year..

However, medicine savings is also used first to covered doctor visits and generic meds if you choose to have the medical aid cover it..

Unless you are bad at saving, you may be better off putting money away in an interest bearing bank account each month, to cover the cost of the glasses each year..

If it works like that then yeah, Im a new pepega to medical and insurance. Got any recommendations for house and motorcycle insurance?

Thanks for explaining it better than Discovery themselves did with me.

Seriously though yup, if that's how it works, will just put money away in my savings for glasses, was just curious because I was spoilt from my previous medical scheme which actually covered up to R6000 in glasses excluding frames though.
