Thank you for your email.

The article in today’s Star following up on the authorisation for Mrs Smith’s spinal surgery is misleading and inaccurate. After receipt of the updated clinical information late last week, Discovery Health submitted the updated information to the SA Spine Society, in order to confirm the precise details of the procedure to be authorised. We received feedback from the SA Spine Society at lunch time on Monday 29th July; we then communicated the formal approval to the treating doctors, as well as to Mr and Mrs Smith during the course of yesterday afternoon, by telephone, email and sms messages.

You are welcome to read our official response on the following link http://bit.ly/1cgKHZQ

If you have any more questions, please call us on 0860 99 88 77 or email healthinfo@discovery.co.za. Alternatively, you can access the website at www.discovery.co.za.

Warm Regards

What is that time?
12 months.

They only exclude cover for new members arriving. They would not exclude cover when migrating to a higher coverage plan within the same medical scheme.
They can't even if they want to. Although I know of cases where the medical aid has lied to the member telling them their condition is permanently excluded.

My dad died in 2008 after battling cancer for 12 months. My mom suffered a stroke in the same year. Discovery paid every cent without a murmur and are still paying my mom's substantial medical fees. We're on their classic comprehensive plan.

Is this possibly covered on Critical Illness Benefit/Dreaded Disease cover?

All the medical aids are brilliant until you have some serious and expensive condition. Then you f****ed. Its called the South African healthcare system. Efficient at treating a runny nose and that's about it.

My wife couldn't work because between the medical aid and doctors, she never got the treatment she needed.

We emigrated to the UK and within 3 months on the NHS she is working full time.

... Profit is the number one motive, not health care.

Common misconception, but not the case. Medical schemes are run on a non-profit basis (i.e. members are the shareholders). This happened a few years ago and all medical schemes were forced to change.

Non-profit does not prevent the directors and employees of making a killing.

And then they exploited the loophole. Administrators can make as much as they like. Medical aids not being run for profit is nothing more than semantics.
