Discovery sees spike in claims due to suicide for over 50-year-olds

People taking the easy way out.
Easy to judge. We don't know what is going on in their lives. Sometimes people are so alienated from life and their loved ones they choose to end it. Some are so deep in the crap they don't know how to get out of it. 18 months of chemo almost put me there because I felt like **** for so long as well as my personal life and job suffering as a result.

Well said.

I have had 3 people in my family commit suicide, my brother and 2 nephews!
I would say that is an unnatural number of suicides for one family (total family members = 12)
That is 25% (1 in 4).
That is a scary number. Sorry to hear .

Yep. If my quality of life deteriorates I want the option of pulling the plug myself.
Get yourself a living will. Speak to your loved ones about it, and make it clear that everyone understands the implications. Done.

To each their own.

Yep. SO and I are both sorted. And made sure our siblings understand exactly what we want done. So there are no family issues after.

Make no mistake, if a loved one or SO had a living will and stated that the machines must be switched off, you still sit with that burden over you. Even tho everyone knew that is what the person wanted to happen.

I made peace with it when we had to turn off the machines for my mother. My father I suspect had a bigger/harder battle than I did regarding switching off life support for my mom. He always said no he was fine and we did the right thing on the day, but I have a feeling that it is part of what he battled to accept and work through after she passed and eventually, he decided suicide was the only way to get rid of the constant pain and suffering with the depression he had.

Discovery Life is concerned about a significant increase in death claims due to suicide among individuals aged 41 to 60 in 2024.

This worrying trend was highlighted during a virtual media conference on Wednesday, where the insurance giant presented its claims experience report for the past year.

The report revealed that one in five death claims were due to unnatural causes, with suicide accounting for the largest portion at 35%, followed by motor vehicle accidents at 23%.
The suicides are possibly due to the ever-increasing premiums and decreasing benefits that are imposed by said medical aid/insurance company/bank. I know I can no longer afford top tier cover from them!

Why is this a concern? As I understand, suicide is not able to be claimed?
my question as well, Discovery will find any tiny thing to deny a claim,
they are a rich insurance company who tries to do all sorts of tricks to keep people paying premiums and not claiming anything.

what I find interesting is the age of the people,
as people grow older, lived hard lives full of turmoil, this is sadly going to be more common.

Only a 2 year exclusion period. Where thereafter a valid claim could be made if they cannot prove pre existing conditions which was not disclosed at application stage
Suicide is not a condition though and is a default refusal in most policies that I am aware of.
