You are technically asking for an explanation of Discovery's business model... *sigh* | Here goes a moderate attempt....

Vitality is essentially a Discovery members club through which you qualify for discounts based on what level you are on (Silver, Bronze, Something, Gold, Platinum). You accumulate points by doing the assessments, frequenting your local Planet Fitness or Virgin Active gym and other random activities to stay healthy (The logic being a healthy you is less expenses for Discovery). The more points, the higher your discount and benefits.

You'd qualify for discounts on things like flights, car rentals, hotels, gym fees and shopping in Vitality Mall (virtual). WRT to the Woolies/PnP discount - you have to nominate one as the primary shop. You qualify for a higher discount at the Primary and a lower at the Secondary. I think it is like 25% : 10% (well at least mine).

If you structure your Discovery portfolio correctly, the R100-odd you pay for Vitality pays for itself in discounts. Silver is the lowest level. Platinum is only achieved through maintaining Gold for like 3 years or something.

PS: I probably failed to mentioned quite a lot to the product but ya; this is the gist of it.

PPS: The gym benefit is the best imo. A R450pm gym membership is like R100pm! Granted, there's a joining fee of R800 or so.

thanks Anonymous that kinda explains a lot
2 things

do points expire? i.e do I need 35k per month to stay silver or is it a total cummulative thing?

I do martial arts and other sports,so a gym membership isnt really useful to me...

looked at pnp smartshopper but its only 1%,not really enough to justify me filling forms :D

The PNP health foods and woolies discounts are different from smart shopper. You get like 15-25% paid back to you on all healthy grocery items you buy, like chicken breast, low fat yogurt, vegetable......loads of other stuff. If you buy healthy, unprocessed foods this will work well for you

They only expire annually and even then, a portion is carried over into the next year. If you are consistent, you should never really drop levels. Gym alone gives you tons and if you do 4x per week; it's easy to maintain levels.

You also get SK movie discounts if that's your thing.
You can also look at Edgars Club for similar but different rewards @ R30 to R50 pm or thereabouts.

The points expire over a one year period, as you earn them.

The main thing is the gym but the flight discount is also really good. Vitality is one of those things that if you use all the benefits its really worth it, if you don't its a money sink.

Combined with some of their other products you can get a lot out.

Gym yep. Flight well 300-400 rand saving. But now they got smart and added a surcharge on each discount  Everything else I wouldn't know because you have to go fetch paperwork here and drop paperwork there. Frankly I couldn't be bothered. I think discovery knows this is true for maybe 90% of vitality card holders.

It's not the best, I only use it to compare hotel accommodation, discovery is rarely the best option. There's others like Edgar's, e bucks and now U Count that's works out better.
Vitality is smoke and mirrors of you don't go to gym often or go to Ster kinekor atleast twice a month.

And if you don't go to gym often enough, you'll get a nice little reminder that unless you increase your visits by <insert number here>
you will pay a penalty.
Solution: Use the revolving doors, card swipe and turnstyles at every opportunity. Park and go.

Yes, it's about R100 a month.

Incorrect:

Dear XXXX

Thank you for your email querying if you could activate Vitality alone.

Vitality is not a standalone product; it needs to be linked to a Discovery Health or Discovery Life policy. All members that are active on the policy that Vitality is linked to, will then be active on Vitality.

If you have any more queries, you can contact us on 0860 99 88 77. Alternatively, you can access the website at www.discovery.co.za

It works for me... Costs around R1100 per year and saved more then that on flights and Accomodation just this year alone... Worth it if you use it.
