Disney+ early hands-on test before South African launch

Haven't been able to even stream at 1080p on the browser yet. Is there a way to verify if my TV or android box is even streaming at 4K?
Well, I can't verify exactly, but it looks like it's higher res than 1080p on my TV, especially if I switch between 1080p and 4K in the quality settings while the title is playing?

Yeah for me on my TV app if I switch between 4k and 1080p I do not see a difference.

I have given up on Hisense 'smart' TVs. Audio advertised as DTS but is not an option on the menu, had installed many Firmware versions, with and without DSTV & Showmax, no joy. Gave up and bought NVidia Shield out of frustration. My LG firmware is also out of support... no more apps/updates. So, whenever I buy a Smart TV I always make sure it is Android TV. Disney+ works well, some strange glitches... When I pause a movie, after a while the OS screensaver comes on, when I press OK to clear the screensaver, the movie resumes with the time bar always shown. Pressing OK pauses the movie without the time bar, OK again resumes the movie but with the time bar. weird. Had to exit the movie and run again to get rid of this quirk. At one time when adding a new profile the keyboard took ages to appear. Then typing took forever. Not sure what happened here.

Do any streaming services offer DTS? My Hisense, which is several years old, does pass through DTS without any problems if I play a source that has DTS.

So I found out my TV has tizen which is required for the app but it still doesn't work and disney says my TV is too old ..........

You had a Samsung?

No streaming service supports DTS. It's Dolby all the way. Even the new Disney movies in iMax format (in the US) use Dolby. Normally iMax /DTS go in a pair.

DTS nor helping themselves by charging so much for their licensing that literally, most manufactures don't even support it anymore. Think LG, and Sonos (two brands which I know about )

Let me not get onto how annoyed I am that nothing in the SA catalog appears to have any thing better than 2.0 sound, because those fscktrds, think we live in a 3rd world country so no nothing about sound or can't afford surround sound.

Found another bug on my Mi 4K stick. Open the Disney+ app and it starts playing without sound. Then none of the other apps have sound anymore (Netflix and Plex etc). Have to restart the Stick to get sound back in the other apps, and as soon as I try to play something in Disney+ the sound is gone again.

Have a Samsung Q60R. I noticed when the disney app is selected, the dolby digital+ is not selectable on the tv, unlike when i use Netflix or plex, these options are available. TV passes trough a Denon AVR , works 150% on Netflix, Plex, Playstation and xbox, all of which the avr auto configs individually. I can get 7.1, atmos and all the bells and whistles from Plex and Netflix and so on....but Disney plus is stuck on a forced 5.1 basic (which the avr says, TV SURROUND. Also, no HDR or 4k. it seems the highest the tizen app can go is 1080p. I have good net speeds and Netflix pushes 4k with ease. Hope they update this. Its not a train smash, the app runs smooth and movies still look good and sound good...but it CAN be better.

Yes, you're right. My Hisense was advertised as having a DTS encoder. But only DD available. Just a bit of false advertising I guess. However, I would ordinarily not mind the DD encoder, only the DD output had no Sub channel on the ARC output. It was literally stripped. There were two other modes, RAW and PCM, but both had the same Subwoofer missing issue. I cannot live without my Sub. NVidia Shield fixed this for me without issue.

Is anyone else's content just capping out at 720p on their web browser, specifically chrome?

edit: here's a screenshot of the stats for nerds while watching Loki

The question is. Would you rather pay R150-R200/m for the US/UK Disney or our R80/m Hotstar promo?
I mean at R80/m I'm not even really thinking of cancelling Netflix and switching between Disney and Netflix, just run them both.

Doesn't Netflix also have this limitation on Chrome?
Oh, didn't know that until now as i always used the netflix app.
Seems like it's a DRM thing but atleast with netflix you can sign in on edge or use the app to get 1080p. Looks like I'm stuck with 720p for the foreseeable future :(

Is it just me or does Full HD 1080p look like rubbish?
I have 200Mb/200Mb fibre

So what's going on with Samsung TV app.?
  • Audio extremely low, no 5.1 or Dolby.
  • Highest resolution is 1080p on a 4k TV.
  • App crashes frequently and restarts TV. Happens every time I try to play the Chip n Dale movie.
  • App freezes when fast forward or rewind more than 60 seconds.
  • Cannot fast forward or rewind large portions, so I can't skip 1 hour into the movie if the app forgot where I stopped watching.
  • Cannot switch profiles.
  • Cannot exit app, clicking exit button does nothing.
  • UI is messy, going back while browsing takes you right at the top instead of just 1 step back
  • I Contacted Disney and I was told that Samsung TVs are not supported. A big brand like Samsung not supported? How does Samsung feel about this, new sales drop?
  • Like really, why release an app that's not ready for public?
  • If all other major streaming apps can get it right, why not Disney?

They figure they too big to fail, someone must tell them about Eskom, also too big to fail, and is now on the skids to implosion.

All other major streaming services don't get it right. Probably most get it wrong. Disney survived similar teething problems in the US, and they have millions of subscribers in Asia despite the problems with Hotstar. Those things can only tell them that they can generally get away with semi-functional applications and quality problems.
