What is the benefit of this if any?
My TV doesnt have Display port so would running an adapter from the PC display port to the HDMI adapter then to TV make a difference?

That's all that's required, yes.

My Lenovo T420 ( no HDMI port) required such a cable to cast to my TV , although with my Google Home device it's now superfluous.

but from what I read it doesnt give you Displayport res or functionality, it downscales to HDMI on the TV or monitor

I think you also dont get sound though the adaptor. The cheap one I bought didnt transmit sound, it is likely that you get more expensive ones that do allow sound.

You need to check which HDMI version the TV is. That's where you're potentially gonna lose out.

If it's a HDMI 1.2 port you might also run into HDCP issues on Netflix & co.

The lower HDMI versions also can't carry 4K @ 60hz
