Disposable Nappies - where to buy?

So our son is now almost 3 weeks old. :) And we're almost through our baby-shower-sponsored nappies :(

I've been given the mighty task of going out this afternoon after work and buying some more disposable nappies. Generally we've been using the standard Huggies or Pampers, size 1. We still have a bunch of size 2's left, but he doesn't quite fit into those yet.

Any suggestions on what I should buy and where and how many? We have one packet left, so I can't wait for a special or something (but will buy in bulk if there is a Game special or something). I also don't want to buy too much and then find out he out-grows them in a week's time.

I live/work in Pretoria East.

Do yourself a favour and get your local paper. In my area its the Randburg Sun. All your local supermarkets generally have weekly adverts. Check PicknPay, Checkers, Game, Clicks, Dischem and any other place that sells nappies for good specials as prices can vary greatly. Depending on nappy size and quantity the price difference can be as much as a rand or two a nappy. Due to how many you use it can add up to hundreds of rands a month. When we saw really good specials we would by 6-8 jumbo packs at a time to stock up for a few months. The nice thing about nappies is that you can exchange for larger sizes at no cost at most retailers so you don't have to worry that much about baby jumping in size suddenly and you being left with nappies that are now too small.

We usually bought at Game. They used to sell pampers in a box, but this was a few years ago so I'm not too sure they still stock those

Somebody told me they bought a box over the weekend. I'll head to Game in lunch to see what they have.

So are the boxes bulk packages of 23 or 43 or 66 nappies (or whatever sizes Pampers and Huggies come in)? So I can open the box, use one pack of say 43 size 1's, then return the other for size 2's?

Shame the retailers don't utilise the internet more. I can check prices at Pick n Pay, Marko and Reggies and SOME of the others using sites such as retailpricewatch.co.za and guzzle.co.za, but seems like I will have to visit the stores physically (or as Cius suggested, get a local paper).

as Cius advised check your local papers,we do that so if we see anything I'll post here, Baby boom normally is decently priced, also some times toys R Us or Regies arent badly priced, Game isnt bad as well.
Also you mentioned huggies if you using the dry comfort I have to be honest those are (pardon the pun) $h1t

whereever you decide to buy just make sure you get huggies gold size 1 nappies (light blue packet). They can stretch better than pampers newborn, so if u decide to buy, go for those because even they are made for bigger babies (hope I'm making sense)

An easier option (if you have GAME near you) is take any advert to GAME for a price beat. Then you dont have to drive around to those specific shops.

www.babyboom.co.za usually loads their specials once a month.

Interesting - good to know!

So what's the general preference: Pampers or Huggies? And the standard stuff or the premium/Gold stuff?

Or does it change over time (somebody told me this was the case with their son).

I also have a bunch of Discovery Vitality vouchers to get a 10% discount on Pampers or Huggies at Toys R Us - and at least they show prices online.

I have never understood mothers being so opinionated about something like a brand of diaper; some of them get real vocal about buying only this or that brand.

We shall see if my wife becomes the same. I'm guessing it is something to do with getting up at 3:00 only to find out the previous nappy you put on leaked out of the side. That would get me pretty opinionated about that brand pretty quick. :p

Our youngest is now 30 months and we started out with Pampers. We changed to Cuddlers from around 18 months. She's currently being potty-trained (gawd, what a mission that is on its own :) )

Exactly, with our child Pampers gold would not last the night, but Huggies dry comfort worked wonders. Nothing worse then waking up and having to wash bedding before work because the nappy couldn't hold the liquid.

There is no one brand that does not leak and another that always leaks. I suppose it depends on many factors.

price per nappy ( on pampers) baby city works out the cheapest, my wife is a bargain hunter of note, but we always end up there
