For what it's worth, some observations about connecting to the Wonderboom tower...

I was initially about 1,2 km from the Wonderboom tower with a very steep slant towards the tower. I use an UTD without external antenna.
Signal: -69 to -74
Speed: 400 - 1100 kbps, average at about 650 kbps
Regular uplink failures.

I could also see the Sunnyside tower at 8 km which caused problems by occasionally providing a stronger signal for brief periods.

I then moved to a location about 2.5 km from the tower, the slant to the tower is less steep and Sunnyside is only occasionally visible at very low signal levels and at a distance of 6 km.
Signal: -82 to -87
Speed: 160 - 700 kbps, average at about 300 kbps
Few uplink failures.
Except for the severe disconnections last Thursday & Friday, actually overall less disconnections. I also seem to get less 'ghost' BS's than before with rfScan, probably less interference / reflections at current location.

At both locations the UTD has 5 LEDs on for the signal, haven't checked with the terminal app what the signal strength and FER are lately.

I also noticed that by lowering the UTD by 500mm to ground level the signal drops by 10 dB.

I must stress that with both installations I didn't bother to find a sweet spot, I put the UTD where it is comfortable for me. Doing FC4 updates (single threaded) at 160 - 400 kbps is acceptable for me if I can continue doing other things  [I still vividly remember doing a full distro post-installation update for FC2 on dialup (InfinitCall) a year ago at 30 - 40 kbps. It took a couple of weeks  ]

I connect through IPCop.
