Hi everyone, DIY noob here - Can anyone advise the best way to get a screw rethreaded?

See component here: http://puu.sh/npxmg/d63ddb9f54.jpg

I believe this is an M10 bolt with a 1 or 1.25 pitch. I visited builders warehouse this weekend but didn't have much luck with the guys. Is this something I could do fairly easily, and if so what kind of tools would I need to get? or should I leave this to the experts who do this as a service?

Appreciate the feedback thanks

Very simple if the thread is salvageable. You need a tap and die set similar to this:

is it necessary for the bolt to be so long? if not, just cut off the affected area. You won't be able to fix those threads in your pic. You could also consider making your own part...

provided that there is still meat left on the bone to rethread so to speak, a die would work.. if there isnt enough metal left to rethread, it will just get stripped again.. if you need to get more metal back on the screw, you are looking at having to weld some more on, then having to shave it down to the correct diameter, then you can run your die over it to rethread it.. you will need a welder and a center lathe to do all that, or at least a bench grinder and some patience to grind it down to correct diameter..

if i were you, i would look at recreating the part, rather than salvaging it.. try d.y.i or else, go ask a few engineering shops how much they will charge to make a new one..

Thanks for the advice everyone! Will check out the tap and die set, if not will try find someone who can recreate the part for me. I work in the Woodstock / Salt River area so shouldn't have to look far.

Ya, that looks like a relatively simple tool to make yourself. Bit of threaded rod a saw and a drill.
