Hi,

Does anyone know how to setup the 300G ADSL modem on a win2k pc; Telkom won't help as I don't have account with them and did not buy modem...

Using the modems web management screens, I've entered my username/password (from ISP) into PPP setup screen and it's saying 'Link Up' and if I check the 'Alarms' screen I can see it getting the DNS server IPs.. but can't browse to any sites...

I've also set my default gateway to the IP of the modem but even doing a traceroute just returns timeouts..

Any ideas?

Thanks...

HillBilly,

D-Link made a mistake including the option to set up PPPoE on the DSL-300G, since it does not actually support PPPoE, or any routing or NAT for that matter.

The DSL-300G is not an ethernet ADSL router, but an ethernet to ethernet over ATM bridge. Basically, it creates a simulated physical layer link over the ATM physical layer that makes your ethernet appear to be directly connected to Telkom's ethernet over ATM network.

UPDATE:
-------

Oh bollocks, the instructions below will only work with Windows XP, you think all Windows NT variants will be alike... Sorry. For PPPoE to work on Windows 2000, you will first need to get a PPPoE client, as one is not built in like in Windows XP. A list of freeware and payware PPPoE clients can be found at this address: http://www.dslreports.com/pppoe

-------

This doesn't mean it's not useful though, setting it up is quite simple, instructions follow:

1) On the DSL-300G, delete the PPPoE interface.

2) Set up the ethernet over ATM interface (eoa0), to have the following settings:

IP address: 0.0.0.0
Netmask: 0.0.0.0
DHCP: Disabled
Default Route: Disabled
Interface Sec Type: Public

Now save these settings.

3) On your Windows 2000 machine, right click "My Network Places"

4) Click "make a new connection" or "create new connection"

5) Select "connect to the internet"

6) Select "broadband internet connection that requires me to log in"

7) You will now be asked for your username and password, complete them and keep clicking OK until you can click Finish, click Finish.

If before you reach the "finish" point, you are asked for a service name, leave the field blank and click OK, if you are asked if you wish to enable the internet connection firewall for that connection, answer yes.

You should now see a new internet connection in the "My Network Places" window. Double click on the connection and you will see a box resembling the old Windows dial-up connection box. Click "Dial" and you will be connected.

Thanks Podo,

Eventually managed to get it right; I went to the d-link.co.za site and they had a few pearls of wisdom buried in the support area[:)].

Am going to follow your advice though and delete the PPP entries in the modem setup (username * password are stored in there).

In case anyone else has the same problems, you need a PPPoE dialer that you can get here:
http://www.d-link.co.za/Download_files/WINPPPOE.zip
Then the installation/setup instructions are here:
http://www.d-link.co.za/ADSL modems/DSL-300G setup.doc

Don't bother too much with the booklet/cd that's bundled with the modem (other than to get to the web management tool).
