Depends on which sites your machine is doing DNS lookups for compared to someone else - if the DNS servers have the [correct] host & IP pairs cached that you're accessing then you won't get DNS lookup errors [unless there is a timeout], whereas someone else accessing different sites that are not all cached, will get DNS lookup erros...

Hmm, I wonder then if anyone who is getting DNS errors could post the address to the site here so we can check it out. Maybe doing a whois check, or tracert would show up some problems?

All,

Are we still seeing DNS errors?

I'm not comfortable that we start adding IP's in manually. It defeats the whole purpose of having then assigned automatically.

The new servers came online before the weekend and I'm getting them pushed-back and have no problems.

If you still get DNS errors please post:

1) Your assigned DNS servers. (Do a ipconfig /all)
2) the APN you're using.

I got these problems once before, but that was in the middle of last week (or somewhere near that time). I haven't had a problem since.

Doing a trace on the mybroadband.co.za server, shows some of the atlas.cogentco.com servers responding very slowly, and one even timed out. It could be that when the SAIX DNS server does a lookup, it contacts one of these servers in its quest to find the needed IP, and then the server times out, causing a DSN error on our end.

I am still having DNS problems now at 16H15. Even Telkom ADSL never had me in this predicament in the two years I was on contract. Vodacom reliability and credibility sucks. I use the internet to make a living, but I have basically been off line since Thursday am. Tonight the balance of my 1 gig bundle expires and will not be carried over. What a waste. What is the point of giving my IP addresses and or APN again, nothing happens. I am gatvol with Vodacom.

Using the 'internet' APN, DNS servers manually assigned as:

nameserver 196.207.32.69
nameserver 196.43.45.190

(manual because wvdial still gets them as 10.11.12.13 and 10.11.12.14)

I'm still getting:

Bad Gateway
The following error occurred:

Code:
The IP address was not found during the DNS lookup. Contact your system administrator.

... when trying to access http://register.vmware.com/content/registration.html

The DNS errors described in this thread have very little to nothing to do with speed|throughput problems.

PS: dbnuser, welcome to MyADSL :).

Wow - I'm getting it 40% of the time

Bad Gateway
Code:
The IP address was not found during the DNS lookup. Contact your system administrator.

I can't get to most of the sites I host on my server in Sandton - I can't work! (4 Days now)

Why is there still a problem?
I thought they said it would be fixed this weekend?
Why is there no mention of this problem on Vodacoms web site?

I have tried manual insertion of DNS Servers to use that where posted here - no difference at all.

I have been trying since friday to read this thread and register - I'd get half way though then - bad gateway.

I'm in Lanseria, btw, 3g/hsdpa.

Autoassign DNS - IPCONFIG / ALL shows: 196.207.32.69 and 196.43.1.11 (How do I know my APN?)

Sorry to make my 1st post here a rant, but I'm really battling....

Come on VODA, do something fast!! - I'm losing money!!

Those IP addresses look strange, I can't imagine why you would be getting those. The ones I get when doing an ipconfig are
196.207.32.69
196.43.45.190

Are you sure you checked under the correct heading? It would be something like "PPP Adapter 3G Only Connection".

Your APN will most likely be "internet", if you haven't changed it, or don't know how, then it will be "internet" as that is the default. Try manually assigning the above IP addresses as I stated in a previous post in this thread and see if that helps.

P.S. Welcome to the forum :D

I also had the abovementioned auto assigned DNS. I changed to the recommended ones and checked my APN was 'internet', to no avail, I still got Bad Gateway responses from most of the sites I visit. My financial position also relies on internet access. At 07h30 this am, I am still getting Bad Gateway, even on this site.

Try changing to the internetVPN APN, I am not sure, but I think if you go to "Tools" -> "Mobile Profiles" -> "Edit" and edit your 3G only profile you will get the option to change to the internetVPN APN, it should help with the problems according to feedback on this thread.

I got p*ssed off before I could check my DNS.

error 619, close, eject, restart, insert, error 619, close, eject, restart, insert, error 619, close, eject, restart, insert, etc.

Of course, if I'd got beyond that it would've just been to see
Code:
!

The last six weeks I have really struggled with 3G/HSDPA. Vodacom doesn't seem able to provide me for the service that I'm paying for. Like a lot of people here this is having a adverse effect on my business.

If this continues i'll have to find an alternative connection, and be careful the Vodacom operator who expects me to pay a penalty for closing my contract early.

Thanks for your reply - I have tried all the IP addresses mentioned here - I have now turned back to autoassign - and the IP addresses posted above are what has been assigned to my PPP adapter 3G Only Connection - they seem to work marginally better, but I'm still seeing 30% Bad Gateway error - Mostly on the sites I need to be working on (My server is co-located at DataPro), and a few of US based sites. Oh - even parts of BBC website. (This forum still sometimes too)

I'd say this is a very serious problem? I have a friend still having priblems in Bez valley - miles away from me (Lanseria) - So surely it is not just a few of us?

Come on VODA!!!

Ok, for what it's worth, here is my advice, considering that you are trying to access specific sites with static IP addresses @DataPro, I recommend that you [1] stick with the auto-assigned DNS settings as also mentioned by v3g; and [2] as a temporary measure, you can add the IP & hostname pairs for the urgent sites that you're trying to access, to your Windoze hosts file e.g.:
Code:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc\hosts
you will also need to ensure that Windoze has lmhosts lookup enabled [Connection TCP/IP settings WINS tab].

Beside the fact that no-one can actually connect at the moment (!), any general feedback on the DNS issues?

According to my info, the DNS errors was resolved last night, so I'm worried if there are still sporadic DNS problems being reported.

When you do report, please include your area as we run different servers for different parts of the country, i.e. just update your location info in your forum profile.

Suburb, Town would be very nice.
