Do any of you guys use vinegar as a fabric softener replacement?

The rubbers used inside the machines are resilient to alkalines. Acids will perish them eventually, but after many many years.

I use softener all the time. Every month or so, I let the machine run empty on its longest, hottest cycle. Then I dump vinegar it to hopefully remove some of the soap residue.

I have started looking at prices of washing machines as I might need to buy one this year.

Next thing you're standing in front of the engine of one of those ford cortina XR6 things, talking pu$$ & spark plugs !!!

And that purchase you are planning - may I suggest you rather consider getting a toilet seat !

As for the toilet seat....if you ask me it is redundant. Unless you are pu&&y whipped and is constantly commanded to put the seat down. :D

Anwayz.....got a bottle of vinegar yesterday. Will see if it works.

Howzit. I have heard that may people use white vinegar instead of fabric softener. Apparently does not leave your clothes smell....it just smells fresh. Clothes are also more fluffy as there is no build up.

I have started looking at prices of washing machines as I might need to buy one this year. Was looking at the Defy 8kg 1400RPM model...and in its manual it says that you are not to use vinegar in it? So...I did more searching on the web and many say it is fine...while here and there others say it could damage the hoses and seals?

What do you guys think? Have any of you used it for a long time and have you had problems with your washing machine because of it?

Vinegar in your laundry? Do you use fabric softener when you're tossing a salad?

If it does the job and your clothes comes out smelling fresh anyway...then why not. Vinegar is so cheap. Fabric softner is now R30.00 - R40.00 a bottle. In a household that does a lot of laundry that can add up very quickly. Vinegar is dirt cheap.

I pay R80 for a bottle of Lenor from the UK and I've got boxes of Bounce dryer sheets from the US that cost who knows how much to send over here. Sure, it's expensive but the idea of smelling like a packet of crisps doesn't do it for me.

Dear lord...you americans must learn to LISTEN!!!! :p Your clothes dont come out smelling like anything. Just clean....unless you dunk the entire bottle in there of course.

Also...it is friendly to the enviroment and no chemicals left to irritate your skin if you are so prone.

So just to make sure you heard me. IT DOES NOT MAKE YOUR CLOTHES SMELL LIKE SLAP CHIPS!

I'm still disappointed in you. I casually drop "tossing a salad" into a conversation and you don't pick that one up and run with it?

Anyway, you stick with your acetic acid but stay downwind at the MyBB conference, ok? ;)

I've used white vinegar as a softener for my pile of microfiber cloths and it's excellent. Assuming you don't go overboard (I use 1 tbl-spoon in 10L of water), it evaporates and leaves little to no smell. That said, we stopped using any softener in our laundry as we suspected it was causing a nasty waxy build-up on the washing machine. Also switched from regular soap to citrus-based Triple Orange detergent and haven't had any need for a softener since. Clean laundry, clean machine, and environmentally friendly to boot!

So...tested it last night. I did a prewash and used it in the fabric softener dispenser and my clothes did not come out smelling like chips. Will see when i get home today if clothes are hard as a plank or if it is soft :)

My housemate load I did with a prewash with vinegar and then normal with Ariel and Comfort softener. Came out smelling just of the comfort. I did the vinegar prewash as I read it can help to remove more pet hair....and her clothes are normally covered in it from the two doggies and kitty at home.

Slightly off topic, but I use Apple Cider on my hair. You can also use fabric softener as a conditioner for your hair (it was the only thing my step sister used for a long time to tame her crazy hair)... so if you think about it in that regard then you could use it in the machine I guess.
