Hi there i want to know can i expand my lan at work to my home? I want to put a 2.4ghz antenna on the roof of the business and the roof of my house then i can use the business internet for online gaming and so on. And i can also monitor the servers from home. I also want to give my accountant internet at home. My plan is to put two 2.4ghz 24bdi grids on the roof of the business. One pointing south(accountants home) and the other pointing east(my house). then a grid at my home and one at the accountants home.

What i would like to know do i need a license from icasa if odo this? Some people say i do and other says i don't. I contacted icasa 5 times but they never avaliable and never reply to my emails. Someone told me that i don't need a license if im a non-profit wisp. Im not selling interner im only expanding my lan.

I contacted someone at www.wapa.org.za and he told me that he does not think i need to have a license bcos IS will have all the nessasery documentation.

Can anybody tell me if i need to have a license. thanx

Dont think you do - if your a wisp and selling access, then yes, otherwise imo no...

You don't need it if you're not going to sell off access.

If you plan to make money from this scheme, then you'll need a licence.

This is how the WUGS work. You don't need a licence for free point to point LANs in the ISM bands.

Just remember that you're opening a potential security hole like that.

Chances are it'll never get exploited, but just keep it in mind.

With correct security procedures there is nothing to worry about. And no need for licence aslong as you do not sell any type of service over the infrastructure.

re

Damn the one link is 1.2km and the other 0.9km. So what now?

The other thing is that the wisp that we had keep on saying that everybody is not telling the truth and that i need a license if i want to give access to someone accross the street or/and goverment ground.

I think he is jealous cos im steeling his clients. The accountant used to have internet with him but due to poor service i offered the accountant a solution with free internet and 24 hour support. That was the only way that i could get a rb433. lol

So do i need a license and how much will it cost a month or yearly. :(:confused::confused:

PS: I think some wugs are also futher than 300m??

Think there's some clause covering WUG's arse... But that's another story.

If it's not for profit, you should be OK. Security isn't too serious, basically if someone can get signal, they could get onto your network. Encryption and mac filtering make it much more difficult, but there's still a small risk.

Yes it is non profit. I always use mac filtering, much better than wep keys and another way to increase security is to hide the ssid. The system logs will pickup easily is someone is trying to hack using telnet or so on.

So, your company is a not for profit organization then, or did you just fool yourself into thinking that not for profit only meant the network part?

Besides, you have already explained about how you're taking business away from somebody else, and that is EXACTLY what the act is trying to prevent.

Here we go, you are looking for license exemption :
Electronic Communications Act, 2005
Chapter 3 : Licensing Framework
6. Licence exemption

1) Subject to subsection (2), the Authority may prescribe the—
a) type of electronic communications services that may be provided;
b) type of electronic communications networks that may be operated;
c) type of electronic communications network services that may be provided;
and
d) radio frequency spectrum that may be used, without a licence.

2) The electronic communications services, electronic communications networks, electronic communications network services and radio frequency spectrum contemplated in subsection (1) may include, but are not limited to—
a) electronic communications services provided on a not-for-profit basis;
b) electronic communications services that are provided by resellers;
c) private electronic communications networks used principally for or integrally related to the internal operations of the network owner. Except that where the private electronic communications networks’ additional capacity is resold, the Authority may prescribe terms and conditions for such resale;
d) small electronic communications networks such as local area networks;
e) uses of the radio frequency spectrum that were permitted without a licence prior to the coming into force of this Act and uses of the radio frequency spectrum that the Authority finds would not cause harmful interference with radio frequency spectrum licensees such as low power uses; and
f) such other services considered to be exempted, as may be prescribed by the Authority.

3) Any regulations prescribed by the Authority in terms of this section may contain terms and conditions applicable to the exempted electronic communications services, electronic communications networks, electronic communications network services and radio frequency spectrum use and declare contravention of the regulation an offence, subject to section17H of the ICASA Act.
From : http://www.acts.co.za/electr_comm/index.htm : Chapter 3 #6. (Use IE, the contents table does not work in FireFox)

You would fall under 2 c) . So, from reading this, it would seem that it is quite feasible for you to apply for exemption, because you are not reselling additional bandwidth, you are using it as required for your internal operation - right? You're not actually giving him internet access to do the usual browsing for pron and stuff, you're giving them this access for work purposes.

I apologise, I was possibly wrong before. This new act is quite interesting.
