For example, would an Engagement Rings 'R Us store in a comparatively wealthy area charge the same prices as an Engagement Rings 'R Us store in a comparatively less wealthy area?

Going back to the original question. I would imagine they would charge the same price but in the less wealthier area would be willing to negotiate.

Then please educate me about the benefits of going to a manufacturing jeweler (or whatever they are called) instead of ridiculing me.

I prefer using independent jewelers because you get a lot more for your money, the quality is way better and your wife to be will have something unique.

Stay away from chain stores. Their markups are way too high when compared to independent stored. Why you ask? Because of the credit schemes they offer.

You might find that they would stock different ranges, el cheapo for the less wealthy guys and the more expensive variety for the wealthier patrons. You could ask for a discount, but not sure how far that would get you or you might get a good deal if a sale is on.

Otherwise a manufacturing jeweler would be an option. The process and ring is more personalised and you get more value for money, well most of the time anyway. It pays to shop around.

Full answer: it depends on whether or not their prices are the same.

I've seen two American Swiss stores charging a different price for the same item.

These chain stores always seem to have 50% off sales, should give you an idea of how overpriced they are.
