The original statement is rubbish unless you can somehow prove that all or at least the majority of experts dont believe in the existence of extra-terrestrials.

Well, believing in the possibility of extra-terrestrials is one thing, but it's another believing that said ETs are toddling around earth giving anal probes to trailer-dwellers.

I'm sure many cosmologists and astronomers are happy to admit that extra-terrestrials may exist - but how many will you find involved in the various UFO organisations?

What do you think happened to nick333 then?

I don't know nuthin' 'bout no aliens behind the outhouse y'all.

Although I always pictured alan85 as a klingon and I've had this pain in the ass since discovering the off topic forums a few years back...

Without going too far into it...

have a look at this:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pioneer_plaque

NASA made a plaque that was attached to the pioneer 10 & 11 space probes, IN THE EVENT of extra terrestrials finding it.

Now why would NASA waste so much money if they didn't have credible beliefs about extra terrestrial life ?

As the quote from contact goes: "I'm not sure if there really is life out there, but one thing's for sure, if there isn't - it'd be an AWFUL lot of wasted space."

Hope? I doubt the plaque cost a lot compared to the actual probe.

The signal wouldnt return - it would be replied to. In which case we would have somewhat credible evidence that an intelligent life-form has mastered the art of radio signals.

I find it a little absurd though because considering how quickly our technologies become redundant, I doubt they are even using radio technology. We are banking on them going through a similar evolutionary pattern to us - highly unlikely! They are either less advanced (no radio) or more advanced (likely to be radioless as well)

If the bing bang theory rings true - then all civilizations/forms of life started evolving at roughly the same time.

Taking into account how many millions of years it took us to get here (and then noting how rapidly we have advanced technologically in the last mere 1000 years (not to mention the last 100) - it would make perfect sense that hovering space ships may appear to be worlds apart from us and somewhat magical.

By the same logic sneeky_sneeky is quite right in predicting that they might in fact be LESS evolved than us.

Just remember, it only takes one breakthrough from an individual sitting under a tree or tpying with atoms or 2 brothers pretending to fly to revolutionize technology.

Evolved the same time? I think not. We keep making the mistake of comparing alien life to ourselves. They might not need any of the things that we need to survive, let alone be born the same time we did. If they do exist, they might've been around for much, much longer.

This is true - whilst the big bang theory might assume that all life began evolving at the same time, it says nothing regarding the rate at which we or other life forms have evolved.

Lets take the word evolve out for a second - we use the resources naturally available to us to advance technologically. The general make-up of an alien planet might be so, well, alien, that they evolved at a different rate - they might breath Carbon Monoxide for all we know and can only survive on helium rich planets? Who knows - we certainly dont!

For all we know life elsewhere may exist in energy form.
